@bambi_vr Also the biggest thing at this point killing our performance is all of the complex animators we need to do basic things that should be built into the game like sitting animations, limb scaling, toggles and face tracking.

@bambi_vr There are ways to optimize it more like switching to URP, but it's kind of a non-starter since it would break a lot of legacy content.

@vr_hai This is how it should be. Complex animators for toggles is a huge performance drain in games like vrc. Will this be compatible with vixen?

I've recently contributed an open-source module for the Basis Framework which lets users configure toggles and effects on their avatars. Set blendshapes, shader properties (including swapping textures), and display text. Those are native integrations; not animators.

@RockLeeSmile @accursedfarms @notch He also created Minecraft. You can disagree with his politics, but I feel like stop killing games is one of those things that unites people across the isle and saving games is more important than cancel culture.

@notch if you're still interested in helping Stop Killing Games, let me know. We've got a lot of things in play now and it's looking promising. I'm sure you're busy with Levers and Chests, but if you or someone helping you get a chance, send me a message or email sometime.

@xdkloud @lpcwstr I feel like you're trying to apply the (very real) problem of AI art to programming, but the thing is programmers have been copying from eachother since long before AI. Theres also a lot more open source and license free code for AI to reference compared to art.

@anamarreroph @playrust Unpopular opinion, but I actually agree with the support on this one. If they unbanned everyone who claimed they were hacked when cheating then it would be easy to fake all of the proof with a vpn and evade consequences for using hacks.

@PKAnzug Making a multiplayer game work offline is not difficult if you already have the source code. Ive personally done it in an afternoon. On a technical level, I swapped the MySQL database saving for a local SQLite setup which required minimal tweaking to some queries.

The Stop Killing Games movement has officially backed the proposed California bill focused on protecting players when online games are shut down. > Publishers must provide an offline mode or a way to keep the game playable after server shutdown. > If this is not possible, players should receive a full refund. > The goal is to protect digital ownership and game preservation. This proposal follows growing concerns over games becoming completely inaccessible once support ends, especially after shutdowns like The Crew. Most gamers think that if players pay for a game, it should remain playable or be fairly compensated.

@VRDesktop @s0rnt 0.1% to 5% is a substantial leap and Its only going to grow, especially with the Steam Machine coming out and Windows getting worse. I get you're just one person, but Virtual Desktop is still the best VR Streaming app. maybe once the Steam Machine comes out, please consider it.

@Bizzclaw @s0rnt The numbers are not very different with desktops/laptops today (which are the users this app is for). It’s roughly 70% Windows, 25% macOS and 5% Linux

@VRDesktop @s0rnt You're living in the past. That post was 7 years ago, 3 years before the Steam Deck and proton revolutionized gaming and popularized linux and back then windows was still a viable operating system that wasn't filled with AI Bloat.

@s0rnt I’m just 1 person. Windows and macOS are where the majority of desktop users are today and that’s enough work as it is. Also this below:

Game designers figured this out decades ago and it cost millions in failed launches. Will Wright built SimCity with a fully accurate traffic simulation. Testers hated it. The cars behaved realistically, which meant nobody could build a functioning city because real traffic is an unsolvable nightmare. He had to make the simulation dumber before the game became fun. The tension is permanent: the more accurately you model a system, the more it punishes the participant. Real medieval economies kept 90% of the population in subsistence farming. A historically accurate fantasy world doesn't produce heroes. It produces serfs. Tolkien solved this by making his economy deliberately vague. No one knows what a gold coin buys in Gondor. That ambiguity is a design choice, not a shortcut. The Reddit post is funny. The lesson underneath it is one of the hardest problems in simulation design: fidelity and fun are opposing forces, and you have to pick which one wins.

Valve and Gabe Newell keep winning. They destroyed the prominent patent troll Leigh Rothchild in a lawsuit that claimed that they violated the anti-patent troll protection act. Patent trolling is a horribly destructive practice that is purely an economic rent-seeking venture that is anti-innovation, anti-consumer, and anti-competition. It has been an anathema in Western copyright and patent space where these patent troll entities hold a vast number of patents only to sue companies that use technologies that vaguely align with the claimed "invention". The vast majority of these inventions are very simple, pointing to technologies that are in common use, such as a "system and method for storing broadcast content in a cloud-based computing environment", the specific patent in this case. The language of the invention is so broad that it is practically a joke, and yet they were successful in extracting money (licensing fees) from those they threatened to sue. Valve is one of the first companies to fight against this, instead of paying the extortion fees, and won. I am really hoping this is the beginning of the end for these rent-seeking dishonest practices of patent trolling as a whole.

@Lunayian This is welcome. My headset doesn't have direct internet access because I don't trust Facebook, so the horizon feed is just an "unable to load" web page every time i start the headset.
