I'm a in a hospital waiting room (routine) and they're playing pop music very loudly over the speakers. It's driving me mad - can't focus on the book I'm reading. I asked if it could be turned down and the receptionist looked at me as if I am a lunatic: "Everyone else likes it." There is one other patient here. I didn't want to be rude so haven't asked her what she thinks. I've been British and gone back to my seat to seethe.

After sacking David Lammy, it looks as though jury trials have been saved. This is a major victory for English liberty — particularly free speech — as Prime Minister Andy Burnham has indicated that he does not intend to press ahead with David Lammy’s sinister plan to slash our right to trial by jury. As a spokesperson for the Prime Minister has rightly said, trial by jury is a “cornerstone of our justice system”. The Free Speech Union has been at the forefront of the campaign to protect this precious right, alongside Labour MP @KarlTurnerMP, Conservative Shadow Justice Secretary @NJ_Timothy and Reform UK MP @RobertJenrick. Our research showed that those charged with speech-related offences are almost twice as likely to be acquitted in a Crown Court with a jury than they are in a magistrates’ court without one. Had Lammy got his way, more people would have found themselves behind bars simply for exercising their right to free speech. We have defended numerous members arrested over comments they made online or for attending protests who were ultimately acquitted by juries. One such case was Jamie Michael, a Royal Marine veteran who was reported to the police by a Labour Party staffer over a video criticising mass migration in the wake of the Southport murders. He was arrested at work but acquitted by a jury in just 17 minutes. The Free Speech Union’s petition calling on the Government to guarantee our ancient right to trial by jury attracted more than 50,000 signatures. This is excellent news and a significant victory for free speech.

She forged the landscape, with her magical hammer. I always thought of her as inspiring James Lovelock's Gaia theory. Amnesty is no longer the organisation that defended all who were persecuted for their freedom of speech. It has become a self-appointed, vainglorious policeman of wrongthink. It tweets out ideological slogans. It demonises those who disagree with those slogans. It intervened in FWS v Scottish Ministers, on the side of those determined to keep men in women’s prisons and rape crisis centres. Some of us haven’t forgotten that Amnesty stopped supporting the since-murdered prisoner of conscience Alexei Navalny because they deemed he’d said unacceptable things in the past. They reversed that decision due to public backlash, exactly as they withdrew the recent defamatory report, before I or anyone else had responded to it, because they panicked on seeing the reaction. A cynic might think they changed their minds on both occasions, not on principle, but because they were afraid of losing money. You cannot be simultaneously an impartial defender of freedom and speech and a wealthy international witch hunter that publicly vilifies and intimidates small campaigning groups with whom you disagree. As for ‘silencing’ Amnesty, I have neither the power nor the desire to do so. I want them to explain as loudly and extensively as possible why they are using their might and formerly lustrous reputation to attack small non-violent campaigning organisations with legally protected beliefs.

Absolutely, but also the figure is invented nonsense. What needs to happen is just that people respect the signs saying male and female, instead of pretending that they mean "whichever you feel like". India and Sparkles and Robin and the rest of them know perfectly well that they are male, whatever they pretend, so all that's needed is that they stay out of anywhere marked female. That doesn't cost anybody anything, no new signs needed.

This is like a drunk driver saying that AA should be responsible for paying compensation for the damage done by those over the limit. We didn't tell anyone to disapply the law.

Amnesty UK was already smearing feminists as 'anti-rights' back in May, according to @thetimes. It appears that, far from being an accidental slip up or an editorial error, the latest defamatory report accurately represents Amnesty UK's deep-seated hostility to all organisations that believe sex is real and important in contexts such as same sex attraction and healing after sexual violence and trauma. Those who've been defamed are owed an explanation of why Amnesty claimed to have withdrawn the report because of its 'language' when, per @thetimes article, it had already expressed exactly the same beliefs, in the same language, months previously. Many of the organisations Amnesty has attacked are grassroots campaigners with a tiny fraction of a gigantic, well-funded international NGO's resources. The defamatory report has already had serious consequences for a service supporting women at the most vulnerable time of their lives, as detailed by Beira's Place lawyers in the legal letter sent two days ago. The withdrawing of the report cannot undo the harm it has already done and is continuing to do. If Amnesty is under the illusion that the women's, children's and gay rights organisations it has attacked will be unwilling to go to court, they have made yet another massive error of judgement. They underestimate both the solidarity that exists between the targeted organisations and my willingness to support legal action, not just on behalf of Beira's Place, but for all women's and LGB organisations falsely branded 'anti-rights.'

@SVPhillimore Not sure. Like it or not, Amnesty acted in misguided good faith when it produced this report. This is exactly the area where defamation law needs to butt out .

Free speech absolutists are just as dangerous as totalitarians who wish to shut down all speech. No one has a right to incite violence, target individuals for harassment or tell harmful lies that damage others. This was not ‘ideological difference’. Amnesty told a series of damaging lies. Where it bizarrely and unaccountably shot itself in the foot - or rather blew both its legs off with an assault rifle - was making a target out of someone who has the resources to fight back.

@SkyNews You have entirely misunderstood the law here. Single-sex toilets should *always* have have been based on sex. The law is not going to change on 5th August. It didn't change in April 2025. The Equality Act has been in force since 2010.
