Many First Nations members are signing the petition because they want a better future than Ottawa has delivered. That deserves serious, respectful discussion — not fear-based rhetoric.

The vast majority of Alberta’s indigenous communities support and are commercially invested in responsible resource development. Perhaps we take for granted the overwhelmingly constructive relationship between First Nations, the Alberta government, and the private sector. But all of that is put at risk by a pointless and divisive referendum. First Nations have been absolutely clear: they will actively resist any effort to undermine their treaties with the Crown in right of Canada. Why we would want to go from progress to chaos, with endless legal challenges, and disruptive protests that would make Oka look like a walk in the park?
