I agree with all of this. You mentioned the vaudeville analogy, there is a nuance here, which is explicit in your second point. You mention the emotional response that improves learning absorption/retention. I believe that is spot on and real teacher interactions, even if suboptimal in quality, that focus children on their connection (especially if they are susceptible to distraction) with the educator and the material can embed the information more completely. It’s a completeness of your cognitive experience that forces retention. It may be hard to get this through synthetic experiences for the next 10 years of VR. I think one additional point that supports your statement is that the current model also sets a rate limit on learning, especially in different disciplines, to a mean. This can leave students to atrophy if ahead of the curve or fall behind if behind it. A more personalized pace would dramatically improve our capacity to help people to excel where they have natural talent.
