@BroPresby @EvangelicalDW I'm familiar with his language in context. He parses out the "capacity" for SSA and the desire. The historic interpretation of concupiscence is that the initial desire, at it's root, is sin. Your own confession states this.

Sam Allberry deleted his account. He was always smug about dodging the glaring issues with his gay affirming theology, which I call The New Gay Church.

@Smolderingpile @EvangelicalDW I’d like to unpack the phrase ‘the capacity to be tempted in a particular way’ and how he relates it to the sinful desire, radical depravity, and the indwelling sin, but X doesn’t allow long posts. That’s why I’m pointing to the other articles where he’s clearer.

@Smolderingpile @EvangelicalDW If you read all the articles above, you’ll find multiple places where he explicitly says, verbatim, that same-sex desire is a sin.

Does anybody actually buy the claim that Immanuel Nashville leaders only "discovered" the true nature of Allberry's "relationship" in 2026? What they "discovered" was that their 2024 cover-up was about to be revealed.

Sam Allberry's doctrine of concupiscence was a direct attack on justification by faith alone. That should have been disqualifying in and of itself.

@AngAesthetics @MBurtwrites Yes, I agree. The censure concerned a breach of trust in leadership, for which we don’t yet have full details, not his alleged views on SSA (which are often misattributed to him).

It's odd to me when Christians delete a Christian's content/writing/books after some revelation, b/c it reveals an unspoken impossible ideal: that only those who are sinlessly perfect in cherry-picked ways can have something valuable to say to the Church. 1/2

The least surprising news from mainstream evangelicalism that I’ve heard in years. The attempt to theologically construct and normalise a “gay” Christian identity that was ostensibly non-practicing was, and remains, deeply misguided & anti-biblical. thegospelcoalition.org/article/announ…

Lots will be said and written about gay celebrity pastor, Sam Allberry. But one book predicted the final folly of gay leadership and the churches and leadership can still protect their flock and the honor of Christ. "In an eye-opening 2017 interview, Allberry was asked a straightforward question: “If you could be shown the roots of your same-sex attraction …and you could be brought to complete heterosexuality, would you be open to that?” His reply is revealing. Would I be open to it? I mean yes and no actually. There are times I would think, “Actually I would like to be a husband to a wife and a father to a kid”…But in another sense, I really don’t mind…because I see the goodness of God both in singleness and in marriage. And see both of those situations in life as being a means of blessing and of service…both marriage and singleness have their own particular ups and downs…But the fact is that one is not better than the other…"

Anon: @TGC and others are telling themselves "we saw no signs" that a purportedly celibate gay celebrity they were promoting was up to no good. Pastor Sam Allberry was a problem from the get go. Never forget those who endorsed him. I'll have a list soon.

Such endorsements are worse when you read the book: Allberry could not say that God was anti-gay: "Is God anti-gay? No. But he is against who all of us are by nature, as those living apart from him and for ourselves. He’s anti that guy, whatever that guys looks like in each of our lives. But because he is bigger than us, better than us, and able to do these things in ways we would struggle to, God loves that guy too. Loves him enough to carry his burden, take his place, clean him up, make him whole, and unite him for ever to himself [emphasis original]." Full review of Allberry's book at PastorMathis dot com

Sadly, this is not at all surprising, especially for those who warned about Alberry and Revoice for years. The ideology that disordered desires were not inherently sinful is the crack in the door that allows someone not to repent of the sinfulness of their heart. To treat "same sex attraction" as an orientation that is fine to have, provided it is not acted on, is antithetical to the holiness demanded of us in Scripture. The only surprising part of this is the language of “currently disqualified,” in the church's public statement, as opposed to permanently disqualified. Let's be real, the man was engaged in a homosexual relationship and lied about certain aspects of it. That certainly fails the “above reproach” standard of Scripture. Unless this church and those who have been swayed by the Revoice ideology come to recognize this, then this will not be the last time this happens. Alberry should absolutely be held accountable, and he should be guided through a disciplinary process that includes full repentance of his acts and desires. We should desire to see him restored, not as a pastor, but as a member of the body of Christ. But if he should later be restored to the pastorate after years of teaching a compromised ideology and then demonstrating through his own sins the fallibility of that ideology, then this will only perpetuate the same cycle of sexual sin in others. Alberry should be seen as a cautionary tale about what happens when we try to compromise the word of God with the ideologies of the world.
Megan Basham@megbasham

There have been doctrinal issues with this church and its pastor for some time now, treating the sin of same sex attraction as a special sort of sin, which need only be half crucified. It was not necessarily clear that this was how the bad doctrine would work itself out, but it was going to show bad fruit in some way eventually.

Eh. It moreso shows those who still do ministry for years while having not confessed a ministry disqualifying sin are not reliable teachers. E.g., Mark Driscoll. Or better example (since Alberry repented of late): Steve Lawson. I think he deserved to have his works pulled because we ought to expect our leaders not to be sinless but also not to do ministry while hiding sin for a significant amount of time.

You cannot have a casual relationship with sin. You cannot just be "celibate" from Sin. You need to mortify your sin. Kill your sin daily, or it will kill you and ruin your life. To all who think they can live peacefully with the sinful desires, wake up! thegospelcoalition.org/article/announ…
