Josh Turek, a Democratic Iowa state lawmaker and four-time Paralympic basketball player, said Tuesday he rejects the idea that Iowa is a “reach state” for Democrats in the midterms, and told CBS News’ @edokeefe the state is “absolutely in play” for Dems. “People look at us as a red state, but I say we're not a red state. We are common sense state that has masqueraded more red than what we are,” said Turek, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Iowa’s June 2 primary. Vice President JD Vance visited Iowa on Tuesday to campaign for Republicans, as the state has an unusual number of competitive races for open seats this year, including for governor and the U.S. Senate.

In 2024, Catholic voters helped deliver Bucks County to President Trump, marking the first time in 36 years that a Republican presidential candidate carried the county and helping him win statewide. But the Iran war, Pope Leo XIV's biting criticisms of it and, in turn, Mr. Trump's attacks on the pope have many Catholics in Bucks County watching closely in a midterm year per @cbszak cbsnews.com/news/pope-trum…

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore warns that the U.S. is "lurching again into another forever war," saying the war in Iran is "very similar" to the Afghanistan war he fought in. "We did it because we said we wanted to change the Taliban. And 20 years later, you know who's in charge of Afghanistan? The Taliban," he told @edokeefe Friday in an interview with "Face the Nation." Moore said he's praying for the families of service members amid the news that Iran shot down a U.S. fighter jet, and he's also praying for "some clarity from the White House" on what the operation in Iran is achieving.

In the first big vote of the 2026 midterm elections, CBS News projects Texas State Representative James Talarico has won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, the top two GOP candidates, incumbent Senator John Cornyn and Texas state attorney general Ken Paxton will have a runoff, in a race that has already drawn more than $130 million in ad spending on both sides of the aisle. @edokeefe breaks down some of the key takeaways from the Texas primary — and the tough decision President Trump might have to make, if he decides to endorse a GOP candidate in the runoff election.

NEW: @JasmineForUS concedes to @jamestalarico: “This morning I called James and congratulated him on becoming the Senate nominee. Texas is primed to turn blue and we must remain united because this is bigger than any one person. This is about the future of all 30 million Texans and getting America back on track. With the primary behind us, Democrats must rally around our nominees and win. I’m committed to doing my part and will continue working to elect democrats up and down the ballot.” (Obtained by @shawnamizelle)
