“I would still say that the majority of Catholics in the Diocese of Charlotte don’t know anything about what we are talking about.” Despite nearly daily news coverage in both secular and Catholic media, a dubia signed by 40% of his priests, and liturgical directives impacting nearly every parish which fosters priestly vocations in the diocese, Bishop Martin contends that his flock “doesn’t know anything” about the ongoing discord in the diocese.

Bishop Martin’s video released. It is ten minutes long and intended to be shown during the homily at all parishes this weekend. The message is a general statement regarding discipleship and seems to possibly set the stage for the upcoming diocesan campaign which (reportedly) will seek to raise $150MM, though that figure may be scaled back, and money was not referenced. Filmed at the local Jesuit parish of St. Peter’s, and not the cathedral, the multi-camera video is titled “Everyone So Loves Jesus, We Share Him with Others: A Pastoral Vision for the Diocese of Charlotte” and is divided into three parts: 1. Form Missionary Disciples 2. Become the Family of God 3. Go out to Proclaim the Gospel This is a message that could clearly have been shared via a letter from the pulpit read by his priests, but it appears that +Martin wants his voice and face projected in every parish to deliver what some are already calling a “nothing burger”. That this was password protected and deemed necessary to show for ten minutes via video screen seems consistent with Bishop Martin’s approach since coming to Charlotte.
