I do love it when the Guardian tries to explain religion by pretending normal doctrines are “extreme” Predestination and Providence are “obscure” and not just Calvinist but “deeply Calvinist”

@__Conall @NeilShenvi It was you who said, "secede from the union and form their own nation." Clearly you were there using "nation" in the modern political sense. Shenvi is right that this sense is widespread today. But your point is still correct: it's not the traditional sense.

If "ethnicity" and "nation" mean exactly the same thing, then the statement "ideally, a nation should be composed of a single ethnicity" is bizarre. It's like arguing "ideally, a triangle should have three sides" or "ideally, bachelors should not be married." 1/

@PresbyInn I'm always fascinated by people who blithely assert that everyone is guilty of idolatry unless they hold opinions incomprehensible to all but the tiny minority with advanced philosophical education.

When Calvin and other Reformers complained about useless scholasticism and took a different path, it was bc the problem was formally the same as what we see here (only materially different).

@HansMahncke Her role is to make her fellow leftists look reasonable by contrast. This is actually effective and does not hurt the cause. Giving Kagan opportunity to criticize Jackson's illogic bolsters the image of Kagan as "fair-minded" and "non-ideological."

My guess is that she is just plain stupid, because these nonstop idiotic takes hurt her ideology more than they help. A smart ideologue would be far more strategic, trapping the other side in inconsistencies or holding back until the case puts them in a stronger position. Instead, she keeps getting caught saying dumb things and even taking criticism from her own team. The real problem is that none of this matters if another autopen regime suddenly puts five Jacksons on the court, because then no matter how idiotic the reasoning, it becomes the law of the land. If instead you had five smart ideologues, they would still push their agenda aggressively, but the need to make coherent arguments would act as a brake on totally radical outcomes.
Mark Hemingway@Heminator

KBJ is either stupid or a genuinely radical ideologue, and I'm not sure which is worse.

According to the Left, Christians can't play in the NBA. Christians can't be counselors. Christians can't be cake bakers. Christians can't run a small business. This is what Democrats want: An America with no Christians in public life. Time to wake up.

That's it. That's the best picture from Saturday's No Kings protests in the USA. The literal Statue of Liberty being detained by police. It doesn't get much more poetic than this.

When it comes to the perpetual virginity of Mary, do you agree with the Catholic view or with the view of Protestant reformers Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, and John Wesley?

@PerfInjust On the other hand, if the state's intrinsic end is civic peace and good order, then since a virtuous citizenry is necessary to civic peace and good order, the state still has a legitimate interest in promoting piety.

If piety has some relation to virtue, and the state's intrinsic end is a virtuous citizenry, then the state must have some intrinsic principle and means to promote piety.

@__enderwiggin @JesseHughes I agree. There's also more complicated cases (not exactly "demanding," but subtly suggesting she's owed more than she is...someone else is demanding or suggesting for her) which need more care than fits in a tweet. It's worth saying because the few high-profile cases like this.

@CMcCartney77 @JesseHughes "Social stigma rightly remains (even if in a diminished form) after repentance." True ✅️ "True penitents should not be targeted for active shaming." True ✅️ It doesn't seem obvious to me that your last point is something that happens frequently.

Since this is apparently making the rounds again, some helpful tips for all: - It is a sin to have sex outside of marriage - People who have committed this sin, even multiple times, are capable of redemption by God - Forgiveness of sin does not mean you are now a virgin - Forgiveness of sin and following God’s commands does mean you are capable of being a suitable spouse - Men do not have to date or marry women just because the woman is a Christian, - Who you marry is up to you - If someone has a past and you are willing to look past that, then explore the option of marriage with that person - If someone has a past and that is a dealbreaker for you, that’s ok as well and you have no obligation whatsoever to marry that person - You are under no obligation whatsoever to marry someone because of stories like Rahab in the Bible - Who you marry is for you to determine only with the counsel of the Holy Spirit, your family, and your friends, not random strangers on the internet Can we finally stop bringing this up every six months?

@__enderwiggin @JesseHughes Social stigma rightly remains (even if in a diminished form) after repentance. True penitents should not be targeted for active shaming. A supposed penitent who puts herself forward publicly, demanding equal treatment with the guiltless, is not owed the same kindness.

@TheRhetorRick @JeremyWingert79 Suppose I interpret "Earth is fixed" as Luther did. But confronted with evidence, I feel compelled to grant that heliocentrism is taught by NR. I reevaluate my understanding of SR with an expectation of finding a reading that does not contradict what I've learned. Is this wrong?

@TheRhetorRick @JeremyWingert79 Accusing someone of idolatry for disagreeing with modern science (and agreeing with what most Christians historically believed) is gross factionalism, and ridiculous. But also, why can't natural revelation correct our understanding of special revelation? 1/2
