I spoke with Canada’s Prime Minister, @MarkJCarney. I am grateful for Canada’s support for Ukraine and our people. I informed about all the details of diplomatic work and constant communication with partners. We are coordinating joint decisions and preparing our next aligned steps. Various meeting formats are under discussion. I shared Ukraine’s view on Russia’s true intentions and plans. We see it the same way, and it is obvious that the Russians simply want to buy time, not end the war. The situation on the battlefield and Russia’s wicked strikes on civilian infrastructure and ordinary people prove this clearly. We agreed that no decisions concerning Ukraine’s future and the security of our people can be made without Ukraine’s participation. Just as there can be no decisions without clear security guarantees. Until this is achieved, sanctions against Russia must remain in force and be constantly strengthened. We also agreed on our further contacts with partners. Thank you, Mark, and thank you, Canada, for your support and readiness to work together for a lasting peace.

I am devastated to see thousands of vulnerable Afghan refugees deported from Pakistan to live under the Taliban’s brutal regime of gender apartheid. Girls and women will be deprived of all human rights, including going to school, working and speaking freely. Pakistanis have always welcomed Afghans, many of whom have lived in the country for decades, into their communities. They have treated families fleeing war and violence with kindness and hospitality. Right now, Afghanistan is not safe, especially for girls and women. Forced returns will only deepen their trauma and put them in great danger. The government must halt these deportations, protect vulnerable families and ensure girls can go to school. The international community must also step up: open resettlement pathways and put maximum pressure on the Taliban by recognizing gender apartheid as a crime against humanity. Until then, the world must offer refuge, not rejection.

Malala visited Canada House yesterday to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Pearson College in Canada. She announced a new scholarship to support girls from Pakistan & Afghanistan to attend Pearson. Many Pearson alumni were in attendance, including UK Minister Stephen Doughty

#Gaza where schools are not schools anymore. When the war started, @UNRWA was forced to close all its schools turning them into shelters for displaced families. Classrooms that used to welcome girls & boys are now either overcrowded with displaced families or destroyed. Mattresses have replaced school desks. Too many schools are no place for learning. They have become places of despair, hunger, disease & death. Before the war, half of the school cohort of 600,000 boys & girls used to go to @UNRWA schools. All children have lost an additional year of education to this brutal war. The longer children stay out of school in the rubble of a devastated land, the higher the risk for them to become a lost generation. This is a recipe for future resentment & extremism. Children in Gaza deserve to learn, to be children like any other child elsewhere. Bringing them back to learning must not wait any longer. #CeasefireNOW #educacion

What “government bureaucracy”? Our nation’s independent Supreme Court? Or a self-regulated body that sanctioned one of its members? Garbage like this insults Canadians’ intelligence. Stop cheapening political discourse and undermining the independence of our courts, Pierre.
