I actually think zagging while everyone else is loading up their rosters is the smarter move.
Hornets were the 9th seed last year, and beat a Bam Adebayo-less Heat team in the play-in.
The Heat then add Giannis, the Wizards add Trae/AD/AJ, the Pacers are getting Haliburton back.
Then, after Ball was moved, Philly added Jaylen Brown and Toronto added Kawhi Leonard.
Why would you give up assets and gear up knowing you don't have a chance to compete in the East this year regardless?

💰| LaMelo Ball has a 15% trade kicker in his contract. However, by trading him now (July 6) compared to next year, Charlotte can’t pay him the full prorated amount. Without getting too deep, his experience restricts how much he can receive. He's played 6 years and can receive 25% of the cap ($41.2 million). Because he's already making $40.7 million, it leaves room for just a ~$500k bonus. Fast forward to July 6, 2027, when he's eligible for a 30% max ($52.2 million), leaving more wiggle room between his salary and his max. At that point, he's eligible to make that full prorated bonus. To be clear, I'm not saying this was the reason they traded Ball now. But it is an ancillary benefit, and the difference is fairly sizable. Having said that, Ball can waive the trade kicker, making this moot.

the notion that there's multiple franchise-changing, offensive lead guards in the 2026 NBA draft is so far fetched considering you can use your fingers to count the truly productive players with heavy on-ball equity; there's bound to be major busts/crippling overpays within that archetype in this year's draft
terms like 'ancillaries' sound boring when you're talking about bags and dawgs, but they're imperative in providing a soft landing so that a certain level of on-ball displacement isn't a death sentence to you at the NBA level
scalability, potential to play in two guard lineups, defense, size, limiting turnovers and creating extra posessions, great shooting, those things should matter a ton
