This letter is a textbook category error. The Panhandle Freeway was an unbuilt limited-access freeway proposal that would have cut through existing parkland. The Embarcadero Freeway was an elevated, double-deck structure damaged in the Loma Prieta earthquake; after it came down, San Francisco did not abolish transportation along the waterfront. It replaced the structure with a surface boulevard that continues to carry automobiles, transit, bicycles and pedestrians. JFK Drive, meanwhile, is a route inside Golden Gate Park with a history of Sunday and holiday closures dating to 1967 and a separate network of park roads, shuttles and access improvements. These facilities have different designs, histories and transportation functions. Grouping them together because cars once traveled, or might have traveled, over them is not analysis. It is urban-planning Mad Libs. The Horton letter also materially misdescribes what voters are being asked to consider. The November proposal would not transform Sunset Dunes into a “major highway,” much less an Embarcadero-style freeway. The actual choice is between full-time recreational use and a weekday-roadway/weekend-park compromise. The “third most visited park” claim also deserves more scrutiny than the letter gives it. Recreation and Parks has indeed used that description. But its published methodology counts a “visit” every time someone passes an infrared sensor. That is not a count of unique individuals: one runner, cyclist or walker may generate more than one recorded passage. High recreational use is plainly relevant, but a passage count does not by itself answer whether eliminating weekday transportation capacity produces a net public benefit. I never know what to DoorDash, so I had @DevinAI build a map of SF restaurants you can filter by protein, calories, etc. It found which places publish their calories, reverse engineered APIs, OCRed menus, and did a lot of other cool stuff autonomously. Turns out FiDi and SoMa are best for protein maxxing. Pac Heights, Russian Hill, and Noe Valley are some of the worst.

If you think people will vote against a compromise, then you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the victory. I'm not sure why Lucas Lux is so concerned and would even use a lawsuit to block the signature gathering effort before petition submission deadline so voters can't vote in November. It's a beautiful weekend. I finished a few errands, had lunch, and now I'm heading back out. From what I'm seeing online, Lucas Lux is reframing the narrative that the Great Highway Compromise would "close the park," when in reality the compromise option would open access to share the space for everyone Monday through Friday, including private vehicles, while preserving the bike lanes, promenade, and existing pathways. It would remain limited access on weekends and holidays for restricted use. In court, Lucas Lux argued that the installations on the asphalt road were temporary and movable, even telling the judge that the art could be rotated for more display. If that's true, those temporary installations can be relocated. Lucas Lux already permanently closed JFK. San Francisco can improve the existing paths and bike lanes while sharing the public space on weekdays under the Great Highway Compromise. This is change for the better, backed by ~16,000 signatures and real community input, not a proposal based on no plan, no budget, and empty promises painted by Joel Engardio. We already have Ocean Beach and Golden Gate Park steps away. Everyone is less than 10 minutes walk away from a park. This isn't about "Lucas Lux's way or no way." San Francisco has always been strongest when it balances different needs, not when it permanently blocks access for everyone except one use, 24/7. For years, the Great Highway safely served commuters, families, emergency access, and visitors while the beach remained open for recreation. Now we're hearing Lucas Lux's "it's too expensive" argument again. But cost wasn't treated as an obstacle when the permanent closure and temporary installations moved forward. If temporary projects become expensive to undo, the people who pushed them forward should be held responsible instead of blaming the people who warned them. Taxpayer dollars should serve the entire city. When one person's priorities are fast tracked while other neighborhoods' needs are delayed or canceled, it's fair to ask tough questions. Just saw a couple, probably in their late 30s, riding a single Citi bike up Noriega from the Ocean Beach direction. Instead of riding two bikes, they chose to use one. The woman was sitting on the seat while the man pedaled standing up. They are definitely well over Citi bike's recommended 260 pound maximum rider weight limit by a significant margin. Well over. The man also ignored the traffic signals.

A young mom pushing a stroller on the permanently closed Great Highway was seriously struck by an electric unicycle today. She was badly injured and taken to SFGH's trauma center. This likely won't make the news, and there may not even be a police report. This isn't the first time we've witnessed something like this. This is not the first accident on the permanently closed park. How many more injuries will it take before we stop pretending they aren't happening? Since the permanent closure of the Great Highway, what was once one of the safest open spaces no longer feels safe, even though it's serving fewer people. Should we just keep pretending we don't see it?

No really, I’m about to be obsessed with the plans for a lap pool on top of the Marina Safeway that definitely, I’m assured, isn’t going to turn into luxury apartments. What will be the pool occupancy limit be? Is that a good use of space?

This design let's residents not have to get a gym membership nor commute to just use a pool and gym. With stores below they probably will not need to commute as much as well.

For those of you who don't know or don't live in San Francisco, what you're looking at in this photo is one of the existing pedestrian and bike paths that has always been there, even when the Great Highway was open and shared by everyone, including private vehicles. This is just one of several paths available, not to mention that Ocean Beach is only steps away.

The issue is not whether one person should be held responsible for negligence, of course they should. The issue is whether removing a major transportation corridor and forcing more people, vehicles, and conflicts onto fewer routes creates new safety problems that also need to be acknowledged. The Great Highway was not just a place for cars. It was a transportation route used by thousands of people every day, including workers, families, seniors, people with disabilities, emergency responders, and residents who depend on reliable access. Permanently closing it does not eliminate trips, it redirects them onto Sunset Blvd, Lincoln Way, and other neighborhood streets, increasing congestion and creating different safety challenges. Transportation planning must consider all users and all consequences. A safe street system requires accountability from every road user, drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, while also ensuring that infrastructure decisions do not unintentionally create new risks. Focusing only on individual blame while ignoring the effects of a permanent closure is not a complete safety analysis. Real safety means looking at the entire transportation network, not just one mode of transportation or a preferred mode of travel.

You're talking about Lower Great Highway, which is a residential street where people live. Yet you're comfortable pushing more traffic onto that street, closer to homes. You don't want to talk about the risk created by the permanent closure. And why is this unregistered cyclist riding on busy Sunset Blvd? There's also a path that runs parallel, and plenty of nearby streets. Instead, the cyclist is weaving through traffic, tailgating, making S-turns for two blocks, then riding on one wheel for another two blocks while surrounded by commuters.
