You are correct that the Pope is a man like us and is not chosen by God in the sense that God literally speaks and says who he wants to be Pope. Catholic teaching views the Pope’s selection as a human process guided by the Holy Spirit. As far as “insight” we believe he is preserved from theological error is certain very narrow instances. His every word is not considered infallible.

I was today years old when I learned there is a heresy called “Americanism”. It was declared by Pope Leo XIII (coincidence?) in 1899. It’s characterized by basically putting your own conscience above the Church. From the left it might include support for abortion or same-sex marriage, but it seems like we’re starting to see a manifestation of it from the political right in questioning the Pope’s authority to comment on American involvement in wars or immigration policies. We’re even seeing questions about the legitimacy of this Pope. If your first (or even second) instinct on hearing the Pope calling for peace was to assume it was an attack on Trump, or worse, to attack the Pope, you need to examine your conscience. We are Catholic Americans, not American Catholics. Our first duty is to the Church, not our national government.

@PelopeAl41549 Studying moral theology will not help you overcome your cardinal sins. Daily prayer and frequent confession will do that and it might take months or it might take decades, but trust me, it works.

@findveritasx Probably best to ignore 95% of what passes for “Catholic” on this site. I’m not exaggerating. Also, don’t get into questions like whether or not canonizations are infallible. It doesn’t matter. She’s a canonized saint. That’s it. You are not required to seek her intercession.

An apt comparison of what has happened to Swalwell would be Bill Cosby. The rumors about him drugging women circulated for years. Nothing came of them until he started telling black people to stop blaming all their troubles on whites. Then they took him out. It seems people collect dirt on prominent figures for years and years - and it all stays quiet if you toe the line. If you upset the powers that be - off with his head. It’s all a game of moral hypocrisy and sleaze.
