What the hell, I’ll weigh in. I’ve been at many press conferences where media members unintentionally (or very intentionally) make themselves part of the story. This sort of thing happens, but usually not right after the most important game of the season. The idea that media shouldn’t be a fan of the team is correct, but also in this current environment a little quaint. Plenty of people now credentialed are full-throated fans — and at international events like the Olympics, you’ll hear journalists from other countries actively cheering from the press box. It can honestly be fun to see, if you don’t take yourself too seriously. Bigger issue for me would’ve been the fact that we only get a few minutes of coach/player availability in these situations, and team PR reps often look for any opportunity to shut down a press conference and end questioning. (Understandably, bc their job is protecting the subjects.) Every self-serving or arcane Q limits opportunities to ask Qs that could reveal any real insight. Imagine a loud birthday celebration for the cubicle next to you, or a mandatory Zoom call to talk about a baby gift for a colleague — however well-intentioned, it’s still keeping you from doing your job. A nice sentiment, but there are other opportunities and times to express it.

There’s no winning by disputing this and I should probably just sit it out. But here goes. People will all side with the fan complimenting the coach.
