@westsiderag @read_naveed is 💯 correct! It’s unfair to families to announce the closing AFTER their child has been placed there. Now they would only get placed where there are spots left. To make these proposals acceptable, the families should be given a seat in any D3 MS of their choice

@SusanBEdelman @DOEChancellor You are right! So when “well intended” parents propose this idea of sharing PTA money again and again, they should be told the can make a donation to whatever school they want, but have no legal claim on other schools’ PTA money

Tone deaf: At the latest meeting of the NYC Panel for Educational Policy, @DOEChancellor Kamar Samuels called it “dangerous and divisive" to "cast aspersions on somebody’s PTA budget.” He was referring to Manhattan’s PS 9 Sarah Anderson, which raised $1M+ last year to hire an assistant teacher for every classroom and fund other extras galore. He had no comment on the glaring inequities.

NEW: Parents fighting @DOEChancellor 's plan to wipe-out grades 6 to 8 at a Manhattan community school allege major violations of their rights in deciding the use of federal funds to boost academic achievement by low-income students. “We have never had a meeting about Title I funds,” said parent Tiffany Rodriguez. She is demanding answers. More here👇 susanedelman2.substack.com/p/fighting-fir…

@NYC_essentialSW What happens if families can’t afford this? In NYC public schools, where 70% of the kids are eco. disadvantaged, there would need to be a subsidy (the PTA, or parents being asked to contribute for another kid) for those who can’t afford. And those price tags would not fly.

The local public middle school takes the kids on a trip to DC and the cost to parents is $725 per kid! I have twins. I feel like this is an insane amount to expect of a public school family. I brought it up in the parent group chat to crickets. Maybe I don’t belong in the burbs

Queens 9th graders take 32% of SHSAT offers, but only 3.2% of its seats are located in Queens. The estimate is that over 4,000 students are leaving Queens every day and travel up to 2hs to go to school. The city should open another SHSAT school in Queens. open.substack.com/pub/biggerappl…

Tonight at the @DOEChancellor Town Hall in Queens, one of the most mentioned topics of concern was academic rigor. Unlike what local education journalists would have you believe, it was NOT integration, small class sizes, anti-AI, SEL, anti-testing, or other pet projects lefty ideologues and the UFT schills like to harp on. The 2nd most mentioned was family engagement — parents don’t seem to feel heard. Lastly, my favorite comment of the evening was that Queens needs more seats, period. We’re tired of our students having to travel long commutes to get to the “good” schools. Build them here already.

Always proud to stand with our public school teachers. New York City has incredible schools, and ensuring they have the funding, classroom space, and professional development they need will always be a top priority. We must also treat teachers and public employees fairly — including fixing the inequities between pension tiers. @UFT @nysut

Four non-English Language Learner parents telling both the ELL appointee as well as the ENTIRE Citywide Council of English Language Learners how they don't know what's best for themselves. Must be nice in Kelly Bare's, Kim Berney-Brooke's, Nancy Cruz's and Camara Hudson's ivory tower. nyccchsminorityreports.blogspot.com/2026/02/stop-s…

@PSulliv @SallyGold @NYCMayor Not if it means their kids are not able to attend their zoned school or the accelerated High Schools they are interested in. Parents aren’t stupid.

Interesting development (broken by chalkbeat): John Liu is willing to delay costly class size mandate to help ⁦@NYCMayor⁩ w/ budget deficit. Mamdani seems to not want to be the face of that rollback, which will likely encounter union opposition: nypost.com/2026/03/12/us-…

Moody's just revised NYC’s fiscal outlook from "stable" to “negative”. ratings.moodys.com/ratings-news/4… What this means for NYC and our finances: This is the first negative outlook the City has received since the covid crisis. Moody's cited "persistent projected budget gaps that signal underlying structural imbalance and reduced financial flexibility." This decision should serve as a sobering wake-up call about the fiscal challenges ahead for us. While Moody's has moved it's outlook for us to "negative", it has not for now changed the City’s credit rating, which thankfully remains strong. I have every confidence that our bonds remain safe and secure. We have a scheduled bond sale next week which we fully expect to be successful. Moody’s negative outlook should sharpen our focus on the task ahead: building a budget based on realistic revenue projections, ensuring that spending growth remains sustainable, securing fair funding from Albany, and strengthening City reserves ahead of potential economic risks next year. I will be pushing hard between now and the June budget deadline to help put the City on a stronger fiscal path. NYC is no stranger to challenges, and I am confident that our dynamic and diverse economy is well-positioned to meet this moment. I look forward to working alongside Mayor Mamdani and all City and State leaders to ensure we get to a strong, sustainable fiscal plan for the years ahead.

Can't say I feel bad for ppl who can afford $70K a year but many parents are actively choosing not to bother with @NYCSchools due to declining academic rigor, constant attacks on accelerated programs and overall instability with class size law. nymag.com/intelligencer/…

This means an even greater divide - for families who cannot afford $60k/yr and those who will just need to move because the are watching @NYCSchools destroy the few good options that were available to them
Yiatin Chu@ycinnewyork

“Applications across the board were up 25 percent,” Getting a spot at an elite private school was always an invested process but fueled by the small class caps and Mamdani’s call to end G&T, even public school parents are leaning in. nymag.com/intelligencer/…
