Where did this idea that immigrants wanted to assimilate into WASP culture even come from? Germans kept their language and largely self-segregated into their own ghettos. The Irish were accused of destroying American culture and were constantly accused of being more loyal to Rome than to America. Italians, poles, Mexicans (even in the 1800s) lived in ethnic enclaves for generations. The push to integrate everyone into Anglo culture is a very modern thing. And it actually has more to do with modernity and deterritorialization than anything. Historically, assimilation meant you were loyal to the country, respected the laws, and were able to speak English as the lingua franca. Cultural sterilization is an extremely modern concept and as anti-Catholic as it gets. If this were the cases, many people groups that remain Catholic to this day would have lost their identity and their faith. Regardless, America does not even have a stable culture onto which anyone can assimilate anymore. The country hates itself and it has abandoned its Christian roots. What even is "american culture" nowadays? Speaking English alone, consuming media and transitioning your gender?
