As a boomer, I would have negotiated the bill with the providers. I did this when I was in my 20s and in my 70s. I never had insurance till I was 65 then I had to have Medicare. I tell the hospital/doctor I can't afford the 20% and they remove it... I can't. Doctors/hospitals charge a lot because they want whatever the MC people will pay, not a lot. I go to a doctor who does a proceedure on me and charges me $10,500. MC lowers the price to $3500. I pay $700, Hospital pays $2800. HE for gives my $700 and he has $2800 he wouldn't have had if I didn't see him in the first place. If he hadn't agreed to it, I would have foregone the proceedure.
