Since the war against Iran began, hundreds of civilians in Lebanon have been killed and injured, and over a million people have been displaced. Israel has also signaled plans to occupy much of southern Lebanon. This cannot continue — civilians must be protected, civilian infrastructure should not be targeted, and we must stop any Israeli occupation of Lebanon.

The Israelis have just renewed their threat on Lebanese ambulances, saying, with zero evidence, that they are being used by Hezbollah for military activities. These are the people that Lebanese government officials want to surrender to? People who drop bombs on our ambulances and are currently threatening two hospitals in Beirut?

I am signing @RepRashida's War Powers Resolution to stop all U.S. military involvement in Israel’s hostilities in Lebanon. The war in Lebanon has displaced nearly 1 million people and has claimed the lives of thousands. Our federal government must hold itself to higher humanitarian standards than participating in a war that is putting innocent people at risk.

From a friend in Beirut: “They bombed highly populated and non-evacuated areas. Last I heard there were 254 dead and 1169 injured. The day before, at the time they bombed, (my husband) and I were passing in that area. The casualties will rise because there are still people under the rubble. This is higher than the Beirut port explosion. And they are threatening that they will continue their unannounced raids for 48 hours. So nobody knows where they are going to bomb today. We don’t know anymore where it’s safe. And the sad thing is that they are getting away with everything they do and no one is able to stop them.” All this because Benjamin Netanyahu understands that peace will mean the end of his tenure as Israel’s Prime Minister. By now Iran knows that the only way to protect itself from Israel is to impose costs for Israeli aggression on the entire western world. Iran will have us all heating our homes with trash fires and growing carrots in our backyards if the west can't find a way to rein in Israel.

There are tens of thousands of Michiganders with deep ties to Lebanon— family, friends, and ancestral homes. Today, many anxiously checked in on loved ones amid significant Israeli airstrikes and civilian casualties. My heart goes out to these families, along with so many others from the greater Detroit area who have been living in fear for loved ones in the greater Middle East. For a ceasefire deal to be viable, it must cover the full scope of this regional conflict, including Lebanon. The U.S. negotiators should help prevent further loss of civilian life by sitting down with all parties and being transparent about the deal on the table and how to bring the war to a reasonable end.

A friend messaged to check on me. Turns out he lived through a similar Israeli massacre in Beirut in July 1981. This was BEFORE Hezbollah existed. The Israelis are traumatizing, terrorizing and mass murdering generation after generation. If your state requires endless genocidal violence against your neighbors, you don’t deserve to have it.

I support a Lebanese-Israel peace deal as long as: - Israel FULLY withdraws from Lebanon - Security guarantees for Lebanon are placed - PERMANENT end to ALL bombings - Israeli aircraft not permitted over Lebanon - Israel pays reparations for decades of damage
