In accordance with Legal Notice 178 of the Environmental Management and Coordination (Waste Management) Regulations, 2024, specifically Sections 5 and 7, the National Environment Management Authority - KE (NEMA) now mandates that all waste generators and transporters strictly segregate waste at the source and ensure color-coded separation during collection and transport.
Key requirements include:
1. Waste must be collected, segregated, and disposed of in a manner that does not pollute the environment.
2. Segregation must be done by:
- Separating hazardous from non-hazardous waste
- Further separating non-hazardous waste into organic and non-organic fractions
3. All segregated waste must be placed in clearly labelled, color-coded bins, containers, or bags as per the national waste color code:
🟩 Green – Organic waste
⬛ Black – General waste
🟦 Blue – Recyclable waste
Section 7 further requires that waste service providers collect, handle, and transport only segregated waste to licensed and designated facilities.
Non-compliance is an offence and may result in penalties, imprisonment, or suspension of waste transport licenses.

Bungoma Waste Management Workshop Recap
Yesterday, KEPRO successfully hosted a county-level waste management workshop in Bungoma, bringing together representatives from the County Government, NEMA, and various waste management operators.
The session served as a collaborative platform to:
🔹 Address the challenges faced by waste operators
🔹 Explore innovative solutions for effective waste handling
🔹 Advocate for mindset shifts toward entrepreneurial opportunities in the waste sector
🔹 Emphasize the importance of group networks, formalization, and market linkages for recovered materials
KEPRO also highlighted the value of strong county-waste operator partnerships to enhance system efficiency.
As part of our mandate, we conducted a sensitization session on the Extended Producer Responsibility (#EPR) framework, illustrating how it enables multi-stakeholder collaboration and supports Kenya’s transition to a circular economy.
To conclude, we donated Personal Protective Equipment (#PPEs) to Wasafi Group and Greenpeace Group in recognition of their critical role in waste recovery and environmental stewardship.

KEPRO's Trans Nzoia Circular Learning Tour Recap
KEPRO, in partnership with the Trans Nzoia County Government, National Environment Management Authority - KE (NEMA), and local waste management operators, hosted an insightful learning tour aimed at strengthening county-level waste systems and fostering market linkages.
Key highlights included:
🔹Understanding the role of Producer Responsibility Organizations (#PROs) and how the Extended Producer Responsibility (#EPR) framework supports circular solutions
🔹Encouraging a shift toward entrepreneurial thinking in waste management
🔹Emphasizing the importance of group networks, formalization, and value recovery
We were pleased to host representatives from the Uasin Gishu Solid Waste Management Association, whose plans to establish a transfer station inspired similar ambitions in Trans Nzoia.
A dedicated public health session underscored safety risks in waste handling, reinforcing the need for structured, responsible systems. The day concluded with KEPRO donating PPEs to local waste operators in recognition of their critical role in environmental sustainability.
Thank you to all the partners and stakeholders who made this engagement impactful.

Recently published @BangaloreMirror feature on the textile waste collection initiative led by the Bangalore Apartments' Federation (@BAFBLR), in collaboration with Saamuhika Shakti and partners, @ApparelCircular and @Hasiru_Dala. In April, six BAF member communities came together to collect over 500 kg of used textiles, preventing waste from ending in landfills or water bodies, and contributing to a more circular future whilst supporting the livelihoods of waste pickers in #Bengaluru ♻️ An example and reminder of what #CollectiveAction and #Collaboration can achieve!
