@davidfowl Usually there's a download of an update after that could be as big as the game itself 😲

Has there ever been a "richer" period in the number of new open source projects released, many ofthem funded by companies, than the 2010-2020 period? React, Ract Native, Kubernetes, Tensorflow, Angular, Next, Terraform: and hundreds more. So many of these funded by tech co's!

People are shocked at how this can be true. Here I’ll show you: User profile frontend accepts birthdate, posts date to backend for frontend BFF updates db, emits Kafka message Birthday service consumes message, updates own db, emits message Cake service reads message, updates own db, emits message Baking service reads message, bakes a cake, puts location in the db, emits message Delivery service reads message, calls baking service to pick up the cake, calls user service to get the user’s address, emits message Drone dispatch service reads message, collects cake, delivers to user, updates db, emits message All services consume message and update themselves Kafka/SQS bill at the end of the month: $1MM 💸💸💸 This is how “add a field to collect the user’s birthdate” becomes tickets for 6 teams. This isn’t even just a big tech problem. I’ve seen two teams of six developers unnecessarily break up a monolith into a bunch of services after reading Domain Driven Design and trying to find a problem in search of a solution.

overheard at a big tech sprint planning meeting: > isn't that feature just a new datepicker? > it's a new datepicker that involves 4 microservices

The part about being a parent that no one talks about being as hard as it is, is just consistently showing up. Even if you’re tired. Even if you’d rather not to. It’s way more challenging than people give it credit for but is so important.

Yep! Though I'll say experience often makes it easier to draw analogies to similar systems and therefore gain a very quick understanding of a new space. Somebody who has never programmed before vs somebody who is a programming in a new language.

One of the primary ways people give "wrong" feedback is telling people to work on their weaknesses instead of encouraging them to double down on their strengths.

In 2020 Figma started hitting growing pains with their single managed Postgres database. That means they managed to grow to a $2B company on a single mged instance. I bet at they hired engineers around this time who grumbled about not picking a more ‘scalable’ tech.

One thing to consider for mobile engineers and web developers: There is an ever-increasing push both from business owners and from users to have no differentiation between web, iOS and Android. To have stuff work the exact same way (save for small UX tweaks for platforms).

Do not apologize - to anyone - who tries to question your journey and destination. You want to work 10 hours a week and build a great life? Do it. You want to work as much as humanly possible to try and make a dent in the universe? Do it. It's your life.

@loige The most important thing is the project not really the language. I have been using Java for work for a year now and I can tell you that I found it waaay more mature than the last time I met it at university 😉

@tdinh_me I think that "right" is better because it gives a better sense of how much will cost monthly even though it is billed annually. The smallest number will scary less users and should help conversion.
