One reason many Catholics no longer go to confession frequently is that the sacrament subtly drifted from “confession and absolution” toward “spiritual counseling.” Most Catholics are willing to accuse themselves of sins briefly and regularly. Fewer are willing to enter into an extended personal conversation every few weeks. The traditional confessional, the screen, brevity, clarity, and sacramental reserve all lowered the barrier to grace. The sacrament felt objective, medicinal, and accessible rather than emotionally burdensome. Confession is not primarily therapy or spiritual direction. It is sacramental mercy.

Received this today from a dear friend, and it prompts me to recommend @ClunyMedia as they have many wonderful items, not only well-known works but also older or translated titles more difficult to find. Highly recommend subscribing to their new releases email list.

“In his political essays, Gerald Russello is a happy warrior, capable of seeing the good intentions of others, and he shares Russell Kirk’s opposition to political ideology.” Stephen Schmalhofer reviews @ClunyMedia’s anthology of the work of the lawyer, @UBookman editor, and mentor, edited by @DavidGBonaguraJ: modernagejournal.com/gerald-russell…

My husband and I read WISE BLOOD with our book club at the beginning of the summer. I read THE MALEFACTORS kind of out of nowhere a few weeks later. "Where are you going?" characters in both books asked. I made a connection, read an amazing book of letters, and now, there's this.

St John Henry Newman’s influence on Catholic literature extends beyond Tolkien (which is impressive enough). Without Tolkien’s love of myth and his intense Catholicism, C. S. Lewis might never have become Christian. Without LotR, we might not have had Gene Wolfe as a Catholic writer. Wolfe was an adult Catholic convert but his imagination was directly shaped by Tolkien as a child. Without Lewis, we might not have had Tim Powers. Powers is a cradle Catholic but Lewis directly shaped his imagination as a child. A line can be traced from all of these authors (Chesterton too) to St. John Henry Newman’s conversion to Catholicism.

You know St. John Henry Newman as a saint and future Doctor of the Church. But you (probably) don’t know that without him, The Lord of the Rings would never have existed. 🧵
