@GamingAndPandas Serious reply to whimsical post but I saw a doc on the island they are believed to have crashed on and it didn't have an aquifer so they probably died after the water supply they had on the plane ran out.

This seems relevant again. For non-nerds, Blue Origin took NASA's design approach, careful (and slow) design, with extensive reviews, to produce a rocket that works the first time with no embarrassing explosions. It just exploded and destroyed their only launchpad. The SpaceX approach is, "Build a prototype, smash it on the concrete until it breaks, then reinforce the part that broke and do it again." In my opinion, 20 iterations of the SpaceX approach might produce a design that can reasonably be called "robust." The NASA approach never did. Let's hope Blue Origin has better luck.

@DrInsensitive This is a poor take. The Starship forward flaps went through 3 major redesigns over 5 years to discover what should have been known after 2 weeks in a wind tunnel. Starship will be a great launch vehicle but its development path was a disaster that set the program back years.

One of the major American car manufacturers should produce a vehicle that has basically no technology or computers. Just mostly mechanical and easy to work on. Make them inexpensive and gas efficient. I bet they would sell like hotcakes.

@ChrisMartzWX I've read that Lake Tahoe was from 130 to 200 feet below its natural rim for around 200 years during the Midievel Megadrought. Would have shut down the ski industry for two centuries if there had been one at the time.

The drought out west is bad. But from a meteorological standpoint, the drought is not as bad as the 400-year-long Medieval megadrought that occurred from 900–1300 AD. 🔗 ocp.ldeo.columbia.edu/res/div/ocp/pu… Droughts are a normal part of climate variability. The only difference now is that tens of millions of people rely on water supply.

@ChrisMartzWX Hey good luck with that. In the Southwest, all our rivers are going dry, as well as our aquifers. There is no snowpack in the mountains, which we rely on for water all summer. Nice refrain, but it isn't too late to see it is actually happening.

@Sassafrass_84 A part of the reason California stayed locked down for so long was the California Teachers Association. Their members enjoyed a paid year off doing "remote learning" in their pajamas

Let me say it loud for the retards in the back who keep rewriting history: President Trump was advised to lock the country down for two weeks to slow the curve. He listened. Republican-led states reopened and got back to work. Democrat-led states stayed shut down for over a year. Trump repeatedly pleaded with those blue-state governors to reopen their economies. They refused. Their goal was clear: tank the Trump economy so they could blame him for the damage. Millions lost jobs and livelihoods because of it. Democrat governors chose to send sick COVID patients into nursing homes — a decision that killed thousands of our elderly. That was their choice, not Trump’s. They lectured him: “Don’t tell me how to run my state, Trump! Don’t overstep your authority!” While encouraging people to snitch on their neighbors for not following the rules. Operation Warp Speed happened under President Trump. The vaccines were developed a few years prior. Democrats originally scoffed: “I’m not taking a Trump vaccine.” Then Biden and Democrats stole the election, forced vaccine mandates, and suddenly, it was “safe and effective” — take it or lose your job. Blue states cheered and reopened. Don’t twist the history. Those of us who lived through 2020-2024 remember exactly what happened.

@ChrisMartzWX Fun fact. In the UK it gets this hot much too infrequently to be worth paying for A/C. Don't believe everything you read about what Europeans think.

The heatwave overseas has really made Europeans cranky. Maybe instead of sinking trillions of dollars into “net zero,” which has had no meaningful effect, they should have invested in better infrastructure that can house A/C units. For a demographic of people who think very highly of themselves, as if they are more “enlightened” and “sophisticated” than us Americans they look down upon, they sure get crippled when the outdoor temperature hits 25-30°C+ for a couple of days. I find with only few exceptions that the average European, especially European man, lives up to the smug “better-than-you” stereotype. It is a huge turn-off, and quite frankly, the volume of it that I have encountered online has made me highly prejudiced against them more than any other demographic of people.

The ridiculous complaints about the Jewishness of Seinfeld led me to think about the ethnicity of the funniest comedians, so I pulled up some all-time-best lists on the web. Overwhelmingly Jewish or black. Occasionally we white gentiles manage to produce a Steve Martin or Robin Williams, but they're roughly comparable to the proportion of Jewish NBA starters.

One of the areas in which I differ quite a bit from a lot of folks on the right is the discourse on Mexican immigrants. I think most of the hatred for Mexicans comes from a terminally online component of the right that lives in cities/suburbs and doesn't have much actual interaction with Mexican immigrants. Because boy, once you've worked a blue collar job or been to some cookouts with these guys, a lot of the arguments being used against them just seem completely ridiculous. I work in the oilfield. A huge percentage of my coworkers and friends here are Mexican. These dudes are overwhelmingly Christian, super family oriented, incredibly hard working people. They go shooting or do rodeo on the weekends. They essentially personify all the values that the right champions. So it blows my mind that these guys specifically have somehow become the boogeyman to a large percentage of rightwing people, despite being aligned with them on almost everything. In my experience they are solidly good and freedom loving people putting in a ton of honest work to build a good life for their families. They are honestly doing a better job of perpetuating the American dream than a lot of white folks....like I'd rather have 1000 of these dudes in my town than 1000 white communist blue hair types.

High School teacher? 25 years old? Look, I'm a God fearing man now, a Christian, but when I was in high school, the only thing that stopped me from banging a hot 25 year old teacher was the teacher not having it. I promise you, even though she's an adulterer and wrong, those boys are NOT innocent victims. No way. Tell me yall don't remember your hormone levels in high school. Cmon man.

Sunday marks the 20th anniversary of Al Gore's movie, “An Inconvenient Truth.” To commemorate the occasion, I will do a rewatch and note what he got right and wrong and post an in-depth video about it. I will give it a fair shake and be honest about what he did get correct and what he got massively wrong. T minus two days; stay tuned for May 24th!

You better believe it... 1. IN the 1400s, a law was set forth in England that a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb, hence we have 'The rule of thumb'. 2. Many years ago, in Scotland, a new game was invented. It was ruled 'Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden', and thus the word GOLF entered the English language. 3 Each King in a deck of playing cards, represents a great 'King' in history; Spades - King David Hearts, Charlemagne Clubs, Alexander the Great Diamonds, Julius Caesar 4. In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bedframes by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress support tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on, hence, the phrase 'Goodnight, sleep tight'. 5. It was accepted practice in Babylon 4000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son in law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer, and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the 'Honey month', which we know of today as the 'Honeymoon'. 6. Since 1966, English fans have said they are going to win the cup at the start of every football competition, hence the phrase, 'Deluded twats'.
