Standing Order 6 mandates that the proceedings of the House must be in the English language. If the opposition member truly wanted to bat for the culture, she could’ve moved a motion to amend the standing orders. This is mere theatrics & rightly shut down by the speaker.

The rebel in me says our Parliament is far too docile. I want to see elected reps truly fight for the people who sent them there! Yes, even disruptively if needed. If it takes bold acts like seizing the mace and walking out, like Ed Bartlett did in 2003, then so be it.

I understand @DamienWKing The opinion is data driven and evidence based. Jamaica has not demonstrated any appetite to prosecute white collar crime, corruption and unjust enrichment. Jamaica does not give two hoots about the specific purpose for which laws are made and institutions created. For example, NHT established by a Democratic Socialist PNP led by Micheal Manley in 1979: “(a) to add to and improve the existing supply of housing by- (i) promoting housing projects to such extent as may from time to time be approved by the minister; (ii) making available to such contributors as may be prescribed, in such manner and on such terms and conditions as may be prescribed, loans to assist in the purchase, building, maintenance, repair or improvement of houses; and (iii) encouraging and stimulating improved methods of production of houses; (b) to enhance the usefblness of the funds of the Trust by promoting greater efficiency in the housing sector.” NHT was created for the purpose of housing Jamaicans. The NHT became cash-rich with relatively few houses built for contributors, few loans given to contributors. Cash-rich. People ownerless. In 2005 a PNP Govt led by Patterson (a senior member of the 1979 govt) changed the sole purpose function of the NHT by amending the law: “*(lA) In addition to the functions specified in subsection (I), the Trust may provide financing up to a maximum amount in the aggregate of five billion dollars for projects for the development of education.” Several PMs have dipped into the NHT on the back of this change of purpose amendment. More dipping. Less housing. From in or around 2013 the PNP Govt of PSM at the instigation of the IMF (as I understand it) raided NHT annually to the tune of about 11billion dollars for budgetary support. A 2nd amendment of purpose. The annual raid continues under the JLP. The NHT has moved from a sole purpose institution for the development of housing solutions to an appendage of the Consolidated Fund. What has not changed are the mandatory payroll deductions on the representation that the “contribution” is towards the provision of housing solutions. This remains the legal basis for salary deductions, and voluntary contributions. No special legislation creating a fund for this or that with oil treasures will survive Jamaican politicians. The Norway approach not likely to work in Jamaica. What is likely to happen with oil treasures is the rich will get richer and the poor poorer in relative terms. Inequality & inequity will worsen and corruption accelerated with institutions overrun. Oil treasures will amplify to the nth degree our current realities. Unless…

@_Ashli100 Isat is brilliant in using his public platform to form his case. You speak publicly, easier to help their case where anyone from the juror pool might have heard about the case and have preconceptions if it reaches that stage. It will go into case management, maybe avoid gun court
