Because Ukraine was never beyond possibility. Because a trained reserve and a high will to defend the country remain foundations of Finland’s defence. Because, as Hillel said, "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? If not now, when?"

@Vaqis @FauteuilColbert I’ll jump in as someone whose studies at the uni included shaftlines and spent eight years in the maritime industry, I’m not sure what exactly you believe is the issue. Are you fearing some kind of resonance issue, or questioning whether NG can build a shaftline long enough? 🤔

@FauteuilColbert @CorporalFrisk Are there any answers for these legitimate questions, which are based on facts of existing FDI designs? Because I assume that this design alteration is just a concept with no detailed design modification studies, yet...

Merci à Robin HÄGGBLOM (@CorporalFrisk) de me citer ! « Lengthened FDI on the table, which would add a 9 m long section between the mast and the smokestack. This Jumboïsationwould add space for more Sylver-cells, possibly up to 48 ». « FDI 48 VLS » : lefauteuildecolbert.blogspot.com/2026/04/fdi-48…

Why did Sweden end up with the FDI, do they need a frigate at all, wouldn't buying Swedish be better, what did they change and why, and why can't the Nordics find a common frigate design? All of this, and a picture of HMS Göta Lejon, over on the blog. corporalfrisk.com/2026/05/25/a-f…

Great read on the requirements and motivations that led to the selection of FDI by Sweden, (moderate) changes to the French baseline design and why FDI would/did not for the other Scandinavian nations. Bring some time, this is a long read.

@tuulipukumies @Ohra_aho The alternatives could be fast workboats or similar fitted for containerised solutions, but I'm not sure what benefit skipping the minedeck would really provide the Pohjanmaa.

@tuulipukumies @Ohra_aho The minedeck on the Pohjanma is basically a multi-mission deck that opens over the stern instead of through a giant door on the side of the superstructure, similar to how the decks of the current mineships are used for a number of different purposes when not loaded with mines.

@Soerings I mean, one of the issues with Swedish admirals is that even among the heroes who have received ships named after them, the bios of roughly half of them end with a paragraph about how they went down with their ships when the Danes utterly crushed them in this or that battle 😅

@CorporalFrisk Should name one of the frigates after the great Scandinavian hero Tordenskiold. He won a great victory against the enemy at Dynekilen.

@OAJonsson The MdCN is a dedicated land-attack missile roughly on par with Tomahawk. However, as with most European weapons, the issue is cost and too small production runs (which obviously are linked).

@CorporalFrisk Cool! I’m no expert on MdCN, but isn’t it too expensive, to little warhead to use as LAM? (Or do I just have bad stereotypes of ASM?)

@OAJonsson If you want a real curveball, this might open up the possibility of integrating the MdCN onto the Blekinge-class (the diameter is the standard 533 mm, but I am unsure of the length), which creates an interesting set of options for strikes from Baltic Sea or seas further abroad.

@CorporalFrisk Got it, thanks a lot. Seems that AD will be the priority even though we’d need strike systems too. Good news is that we can put them on land and air in the same timeframe

@OAJonsson For Sylver the MdCN only fit the Sylver 70, which can't accept Aster, so if you want cruise missiles you will have to give up air defence weapons. For Sweden, I don't think that is a trade-off that makes much sense, even if the Greek Navy has decided to go down that route.
