Today, we celebrate a historic milestone for Cyprus and for the EU. 🇪🇺 22 years ago today, Cyprus joined the European family, together with 🇨🇿🇪🇪🇭🇺🇱🇻🇱🇹🇲🇹🇵🇱🇸🇰🇸🇮, as part of the largest single enlargement in EU history. For Cypriots, 1 May 2004 was a promise of peace, prosperity, security, opportunity, and hope for reunification. As a small member state, standing at the EU’s southeasternmost frontier, and as a member state still under occupation, Cyprus knows what it means to place your future and security within the European family. At the helm of the Council of the EU, Cyprus has placed enlargement at the heart of our #CY2026EU Presidency, as the EU’s most powerful geopolitical tool. Working together with our enlargement partners and EU institutions to deliver tangible progress on accession negotiations. The "One Europe, One Market" Roadmap was signed today in Cyprus, on the sidelines of the Informal #EUCO ✍️ 🇨🇾 President @Christodulides on behalf of the @EUCouncil, @EP_President Roberta Metsola, and @EU_Commission President @vonderleyen agreed a roadmap, to move together on a clear path to advance Europe’s competitiveness. Today, the Council formally adopted the final piece of legislation underpinning a €90 billion EU loan to Ukraine. 🇺🇦 The Cyprus Presidency has worked tirelessly to ensure that all elements needed for the loan are now in place. The support loan will help finance Ukraine’s urgent budgetary and defence needs in 2026 and 2027. #Ukraine

Congratulations to Montenegro - today we took a big step towards your accession to the European Union. The decision to establish the Working Party to draft the new Accession Treaty is a key milestone. For the first time since 2013, the EU starts the clock for the next enlargement. @CY2026EU

Deeply appreciative to Prime Minister @MinPres @Robjetten and the Government of the Netherlands for their concrete support to Cyprus, with the decision to deploy a frigate to Cyprus, joining other European partners. This is European solidarity in action. Standing with Cyprus means standing for the security and stability of the European Union, 🇨🇾🇪🇺🇳🇱

I welcome this important step in providing €90 billion in financing to Ukraine, just three weeks after we put forward our proposal. I’m now looking forward to the @Europarl_EN’s position as well. It is a powerful symbol of our ironclad solidarity with Ukraine as we approach four years since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. Our support will further strengthen Ukraine’s position on the battlefield - and its hand at the negotiating table.
