Today’s discussions focused on Ukraine’s EU accession process, with the aim of opening new clusters in June, as well as the issue of Ukrainian children forcibly removed during the war. We also stressed the need for an EU-level assessment of the impact of developments in the Middle East, particularly on energy supplies, inflation and food security. At the same time, we reaffirmed our support for Lebanon at this critical stage and look forward to this evening’s High-Level Dialogue with Syria, an important step in strengthening EU engagement in the region. 📍Brussels ~ Ahead of the High Level Political Dialogue between EU and Syria, meeting with Interim #Syria FM @Asaad_Shaibani. Discussions focused on regional developments, EU-Syria relations, Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, as well as fostering pathways of cooperation and supporting Syria on the basis of good-neighborly relations and international law.

📍Brussels ~ On the margins of the Foreign Affairs Council and ahead of the high-level meeting of the International Coalition for the return of the Ukrainian Children, I met with my Ukrainian colleague @andrii_sybiha. 🔶 Our focus was on recent developments and efforts towards a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. 🔶 I reaffirmed 🇨🇾 commitment to Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. 🔶 For the 🇨🇾 Presidency of the Council of the EU, Ukraine is a key priority. In this framework, we have achieved the advancement of the €90 billion loan to Ukraine, as well as the 20th sanctions package. 🔸On Ukraine’s accession path, we have been working closely with Ukraine, as regards the opening of Cluster 1 and the subsequent swift opening of all other clusters. 🔶 We also exchanged views on the further strengthening of our bilateral relations and 🇨🇾-🇺🇦 partnership. @CyprusinUkraine

📍Brussels ~ I am participating today in the EU Foreign Affairs Council. On the agenda: 🔹Russian aggression against Ukraine. On the margins of the Council proceedings, I will also participate in the high-level Meeting for the Return of Ukrainian Children. 🔹The situation in the Middle East, with a focus on developments in the Strait of Hormuz, Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon. With regard to Syria, I will also participate in the high-level Political Dialogue between EU and Syria. 🔹Western Balkans: With an exchange of views in preparation for the EU-Western Balkans Summit in June. 🔹 Informal exchange with the Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on foreign policy issues, focusing on Russian aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. #FAC @cy2026eu

IMEC EU Group of Friends Joint Announcement Participants from IMEC signatory partners and interested EU Member States met on 6 May 2026 to launch an informal Group of Friends on the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). The Group aims to provide a flexible and practical platform for exchange, coordination, and the promotion of a coherent Team Europe engagement in support of IMEC. It will operate on an informal, voluntary, and non-binding basis, remaining open to all EU Member States willing to contribute constructively to its objectives. Participants underlined the strategic importance of IMEC for connectivity, economic cooperation, and resilience across regions, and expressed their intention to work together in an open and pragmatic manner to identify concrete areas where the EU and its Member States can add value. The Group will meet on an as-needed basis and will pursue practical follow-up actions, including enhanced information-sharing and the identification of priority areas for engagement. @CY2026EU

The Informal Meeting of EU Political Directors took place on 4-5 May 2026 in Ayia Napa, Ammochostos District (Famagusta District), under the Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Discussions focused on: 🔹Ukraine and Middle East developments, with the @FCDOGovUK Political Director as the external guest. 🔹European Security Strategy. 🔹EU’s Multilateralism engagement. Timely discussions ahead of the upcoming Foreign Affairs Council (#FAC) on 11 May and the #Gymnich meeting in Lemesos (Limassol) on 27-28 May. @CY2026EU

Substantive discussions focusing on 🇨🇾-🇦🇪 strategic partnership, EU-UAE relations and developments in the region. 🇨🇾 solidarity, in the face of the indiscriminate and unjustifiable attacks against 🇦🇪 was once again underscored. The security and stability of the Gulf region is interlinked to the security and stability of the European Union. Diplomacy and dialogue is the only sustainable path to de-escalation and stability. @CyprusinUAE @mofauae
