The grand opening of Ulwazi II has been presided over by the Chief Guest, Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak-P.S State Department for Science Research and Innovation accompanied by #IamAPHRC’s Executive Director, Catherine Kyobutungi, Board Chair, Bunmi Makinwa, and other partners from across the Africa development sector. The newly launched Ulwazi II is an ultra-modern knowledge hub designed to foster learning, collaboration, innovation, and knowledge exchange, creating a dynamic space for researchers, policymakers, partners, and communities to connect and shape solutions for Africa. This morning on @NationFmKE's Fixing the Nation, #IamAPHRC’s Executive Director, Dr. Catherine Kyobutungi, spoke on the role of research in building health systems that last. @CKyobutungi noted that while there’s considerable effort, Africa is constrained by significant input and output research gaps: too few PhDs (nearly 10 times below the global average), just 2–3% contribution to global scientific output, and significantly low research and development investment averaging under 0.5% of countries’ GDP. Key highlights from the conversation: ✅ Africa’s research landscape is still largely externally funded, which often determines what gets studied and who benefits. ✅ There’s no strong, consistent case being made for investing in African-led research, and that gap is costing us. ✅ Researchers must better understand and align with political priorities and incentives to drive real uptake. ✅ Without intentional investment, the cycle continues: external funding → external priorities → limited local impact At APHRC, we are building an African knowledge system, by Africans, for Africans, for 25 years and still going!
