Treasurer Pack released the following statement after the passing of former West Virginia Congressman David McKinley: “West Virginia has lost a true statesman and patriot. Congressman McKinley laid the groundwork for the modern West Virginia Republican Party and always fought for our state’s values in the State Legislature and the United States Congress,” Treasurer Pack said. “My heart goes out to his wife, Mary, and his family during this time. I will treasure our many conversations over the years. He leaves behind an incredible legacy and will be truly missed.”

I had the privilege of serving alongside Congressman David McKinley in the House of Representatives from 2019 to 2023. My first night in Congress, I walked onto the House Floor and in a sea of hundreds of people, I saw David holding up his hand so I could find him and the seat he had saved for me. We continued to sit beside each other throughout our shared time in Congress. As chair of the West Virginia Republican Party, a Member of the WV House of Delegates, and a US Congressman, David proved himself to be a strong conservative who was guided by faith and cared deeply for our state and its people. I am praying for his wife Mary, his children, and his grandchildren as they mourn his passing.

David McKinley dedicated his life to the people of West Virginia. He built a well-respected West Virginia company, served with distinction in the State Legislature, led the West Virginia Republican Party, and represented our state well in the United States Congress. With his passing, David McKinley leaves behind a towering legacy and a grateful state. Please join Mina and me in praying for the repose of his soul and for the comfort of his family, especially his wife, Mary, and their children.

Working for Congressman McKinley and his wife Mary was a blessing in 2016. Great people who taught me a lot. Some tough lessons I’ll never forget. DBM represented what a Congressman should strive for - he will be missed. WV has lost a statesman and a patriot.

State Treasurer Larry Pack met with Charleston Police Chief Scott Dempsey during our Office’s firearms pickup today. The Treasurer’s Office is collecting used firearms from the Charleston PD evidence room to auction off this year which will then help return money to the police department.

For the record, HB 5182 was about keeping employees safe. The WV Treasury is a bank. We deal with confiscated weapons, jewelry and billions of dollars. Former state troopers on staff asked for the bill. We listened to that staff. Saying otherwise is not accurate.
