@azjustinheap There’s no time left for silly gamesmanship. The county has an election to run. You have no latitude to make any decision that would delay preparation or execution.

The Board is having a full meltdown because I objected to a resolution unlawfully giving themselves control over ballot drop boxes and declined to appear for a surprise public interrogation on less than an hour's notice. The Court has already ruled that the Board does not have unlimited authority over elections, yet it continues attempting to exercise powers Arizona law assigns to the Recorder. Voters deserve lawful election administration, not political stunts and last-minute public ambushes.

When will @MarkStewart_AZ & these others realize this is not the time for petty public disputes? It’s hurting recruitment. There’s an election to run & we need functional adults in the fancy offices.

Chair @KateMcGeeAZ reads a response from @azjustinheap where he says the attorney's letter is his legal opinion. The opinion says the board would be committing a felony if they approve a routine vote on drop box locations.

A solar farm in Minnesota planted native wildflowers between its panel rows. Five years later, total insect populations tripled. Native bees increased 20-fold. Not only did insect populations boom, soybean fields next to the solar arrays got twice as many bee visits as fields farther away. Two of the things we usually think of as competing turned out to reinforce each other. One study, published in Environmental Research Letters in late 2024, tracked two utility-scale solar sites built on retired farmland in southern Minnesota, where the developer seeded native prairie species between rows of panels in 2018. By 2022, the sites looked less like industrial energy infrastructure and more like remnant prairie. Goldenrod soldier beetles colonized the goldenrod stands. Bumblebees nested in the soil. Monarch butterflies passed through during migration. The wildflower diversity grew sevenfold; insect diversity grew eightfold. This matters because, like it or not, utility-scale solar is going to take up real space. The US is on track to cover roughly six million acres in panels by 2050. The default approach is turfgrass, gravel, or herbicide-maintained bare ground, which is ecologically dead. The Argonne study shows the alternative isn't more expensive or harder to maintain. It's just a different seed mix.

Next stop: Lordsberg New Mexico. I don’t have many nice things to say about southern New Mexico, but I’ll try: Ruidoso’s ok, Silver City’s ok, Las Cruces has good food, and the Aggies’ mascot still has his pistols, which is good. That’s all I can manage.

First stop: Benson, Arizona. The Amtrak “station” (a concrete pad) is conveniently right in front of the recently reopened Pages Palace, a very nicely renovated longtime western-style bar, went in December and it’s definitely worth a stop on your way to Tombstone and Bisbee.

The journey to Nola begins now with a bus to Tucson. Because Phoenix stopped passenger rail service in 1996, the nearest stations for the Sunset Limited are Maricopa and Tucson. I chose Tucson (there’s a haunted hotel by the station and the Buffet is 4 blocks). Train’s at 7am.
