


NIKKEI HITS RECORD AS YEN FALLS AFTER TAKAICHI’S VICTORY Japan’s Nikkei 225 surged past 47,000 for the first time Monday, while the yen weakened after the ruling Liberal Democratic Party elected Sanae Takaichi as leader. The 64-year-old conservative, poised to become Japan’s first female prime minister, supports expansionary policies and is expected to urge the Bank of Japan to maintain low interest rates.
