Yale School of Medicine Has a total of 553 students across All four classes. Total Black students: 44. That’s ~10 per class. Total Asian students: 157. That’s ~40 per class. There are nearly as many Asian students PER CLASS as there are Black students in the entire school. Black: 14% of America. Only 7% of Yale Med Asian: 7% of America. 28% of Yale Med. No, being Black does not automatically make someone a better physician. And I have never argued that race itself is a credential. What I am arguing — and what the evidence actually supports — is that medicine is more complicated than standardized test performance alone. The MCAT is useful. It predicts performance on other standardized exams reasonably well. But there is remarkably little evidence that small MCAT differences predict who will become the best clinician, communicator, surgeon, advocate, or healer. Meanwhile, there is substantial evidence that physician diversity improves trust, preventive care uptake, underserved access, and outcomes in marginalized communities. So the real question is whether admissions committees should optimize exclusively for test-taking metrics or for the broader qualities and workforce needs that improve actual patient care. That is the point. You just dislike the answer.

This is not trivial. Your averages are being used to mask pretty large gaps. 56% medical school admit rate for black applicants with a 24-26 mcat and a 3.2-3.39 gpa Same score range - Asians/whites have a 6-8% admit rate

At Yale Medical School, a black applicant is 29 times more likely to be invited to interview than an Asian with equally strong academics. Today, @CivilRights told Yale that its use of race in admissions is ILLEGAL—and that @TheJusticeDept will step in to enforce Title VI. justice.gov/opa/pr/justice…
