@TheBrancaShow If blacks are 13%, they should get only 15% admissions. Why do they get 65% when Whites are smarter and 65% of the population.

What this graph actually shows is that medical school admissions are not based solely on MCAT and GPA, and NEVER have been. Admissions committees also weigh research, leadership, adversity overcome, first-generation status, service, communication skills, geography, military service, rural background, language skills, and whether an applicant is likely to serve underserved populations. And before people pretend this is some modern corruption of merit, legacy admissions, donor influence, elite prep pipelines, and family connections have advantaged certain applicants for generations without triggering the same outrage. More importantly, the graph quietly assumes the MCAT score alone is a proxy for future physician quality. The evidence for that is weak. MCAT predicts performance on standardized exams reasonably well. It predicts clinical skill, communication, professionalism, and patient outcomes poorly. Meanwhile, we have strong evidence that physician diversity improves trust, preventive care uptake, access in underserved communities, and even mortality outcomes. So the real question is not whether admissions committees sometimes consider race. They obviously do. The real question is whether medicine exists to maximize standardized test symmetry or to produce the physician workforce that best serves the actual population. Those are not necessarily the same thing.

This is not trivial. Your averages are being used to mask pretty large gaps. 56% medical school admit rate for black applicants with a 24-26 mcat and a 3.2-3.39 gpa Same score range - Asians/whites have a 6-8% admit rate

I disagree with the Department of Justice going after Yale School of Medicine over DEI admissions policies and arguing that objective metrics like GPA and MCAT scores should dominate admissions decisions. The evidence does not support the idea that standardized test scores alone identify the best physicians. The MCAT predicts performance on other multiple-choice exams reasonably well. What MCAT scores do NOT predict are clinical judgment, communication, bedside skill, or physician performance. Put another way: doctors who test well tend to do well on examinations. But test scores do not predict how well they care for patients in clinics, hospitals, surgery, or real-world medicine. Meanwhile, more diverse physician workforces are associated with better preventive care, greater trust, improved access, and lower mortality in underserved communities. There is no objective evidence that excluding minority applicants within a reasonable score range improves patient outcomes. We need minority physicians in this country, and we have the data to prove why. So when people insist that “objective measures” alone should determine admission into medicine — while ignoring the evidence about what actually improves patient care — I increasingly see that argument as less about merit and more about preserving exclusion under the comforting language of statistics. "Equality feels like oppression to those who are privileged"

@RenuMukherjee1 The DOJ report stated that Yale uses a holistic-review of applicants including interviews. There is no way that you can conclude applicants were selected solely because of race. They are purposely ignoring the other factors that come into play.
