Federal climate action is important, but it ALWAYS must go hand in hand with building power locally. Congress can provide funding and authorize programs, but only a local movement can bring about change for our communities.

Today is a historic day as the staffers of eight House offices take the first step towards unionizing their offices on the first day our right to bargain collectively is protected!

New: @marycheh is now seeking to ban the use of solitary confinement in DC, after previous attempts to limit it. That’s a big deal, because advocates estimate DC uses solitary at 3x the rate as the national average. Can it pass the Council in time? washingtoncitypaper.com/article/564525…

HISTORY: Congressional staffers will file petitions with the Office of Congressional Workplace Rights today to form unions in eight House offices… The move paves the way for Hill staffers to begin negotiating salary, promotion policies and paid and sick leave!!!

DC is a proud sanctuary city but we need action behind our words. Mutual aid vols have done herculean work & independent orgs have joined in but it’s unsustainable for them to shoulder this response. I look fwd to working w/my colleagues & the Mayor to provide much-needed support

We are urging @MayorBowser to: ➡️ Fund tickets and critical supplies ➡️ Provide staffing on the ground ➡️ Coordinate advance notice for arrivals ➡️ Secure a respite space by Union Station ➡️ Ensure access to COVID isolation hotels, testing, and PPE. DC has the funds to step up.

Nine of my colleagues, @ChmnMendelson, @CMRobertWhiteDC, @CM_Silverman, @CMLewisGeorgeW4, @charlesallen, @marycheh, @CMBrookePinto, @CMCHenderson,& @mayorvincegray joined me in condemning the governors of TX & AZ and requesting services and funds to serve migrants arriving in DC.

The Earned Income Tax Credit makes a big difference in the lives of DC families with low and moderate incomes. Today, Council will consider a crucial amendment that would ensure residents receiving the EITC will still be eligible for other public benefits, like medical care.

It's time to reform DC's Clean Hands Law, which disproportionately harms Black and brown families in the District. #No2TierJustice

Today the @Councilofdc is voting on the Clean Hands Certification Equity Amendment Act of 2022. This bill is one of 18 bills in the Solutions for a #SafeandFreeDC Policy Agenda for 2022, policies centering on the voices of people most impacted by D.C.'s criminal justice system.

Good news today as we moved forward a bill that is going to help make sure the monthly basic income I helped create last year (and that will start hitting pocketbooks in January) will reach the ~35,000 low-income households that need this help to keep calling DC home. 👇
