Hi Folks, I have been largely silent on X since April, when I last saw my oncologist in Europe. My family and friends know that I have been dealing with a severe EBV infection for some years. It has now turned into CLL (lymphoma/leukemia). There is no effective treatment for this in the US, though I’ve been working with experts and AI. There seem to be some with promise but they are still in FDA trials. The treatments in April have left me largely dysfunctional. But without treatment, life expectancy is not long, months, maybe a few years. Doing the best I can.

.More than a quarter million people have canceled their subscriptions to the Washington Post, @davidfolkenflik reports. I understand their feelings of betrayal, and their frustration that Trump's threats, bullying and intimidation have succeeded in pushing democracy toward darkness. But I also see the WashPost as an important institution that has been part of the network holding Trump accountable, and if he is reelected the news and opinion staff of the Post will continue to be part of that effort -- for in many parts of the world, I've seen WashPost reporters risk their lives to get the story. They are dedicated and courageous journalists who I'm honored to compete against. An owner may flinch; they will not. Since I work for the NY Times, the Post is a rival, but I want the strongest and most robust rival possible to keep us on our toes and make us a better paper. Bottom line: I'm encouraged that so many Americans care deeply about journalistic integrity, but I don't think canceling subscriptions is going to enhance journalistic oversight. If you do insist on canceling the Post, I hope you'll double down and subscribe to two other news organizations (including a local one!).
