The most famous film adaptation of the Greek myth of Orpheus has an all-Brazilian cast. How much longer are we going to keep complaining about this stupid shit until things go back to normal?

Who the fuck cares? It’s Christopher Nolan’s movie that he’s putting his time and money into. He can cast whoever he wants. My high school drama teacher cast a black student as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, and everyone managed to pick up the pieces and move on with their lives

Guys, I'm trying to be woke and a good person here, and want to stand with people of color in these difficult times, but this is not Helen of Troy.

@Faj1791 They probably wouldn’t, but they’d also have to not die. And in the event a Republican wins in 2028 with the Democrats still holding the Senate, there would almost certainly have to be a compromise pick, which is still the better option.

The "I'm a partisan hack but I'm moderate on policy" people are the worst. They advocate for total gerrymandering, they elect people like Graham Platner and Donald Trump and then wonder why their faction of their party is dying.

@PfPopulist Do you really think that people within districts are static and never change politically over time? Field candidates suitable for the population that lives within them if you want to win. It is not impossible for Republicans to win in New England.

@K1ngD0m0fChrist @StatisticUrban @aidannonx As it currently stands right now, yes, the GOP would have a slight generic lead in a fair map. But the whole point of all this is to take redistricting out of the hands of partisan actors trying to give themselves a built-in advantage and leave it up to pure mathematical models.

@mr_guy56 @Faj1791 If Collins would’ve shown that she was more willing to buck Trump when it mattered, I’d probably even go so far as to support her over Platner. But as it currently stands, I think she’s gotta go.

@DamienPales @Faj1791 Like, I supported Mills. She lost the primary. No chance but to go with Platner because none of his flaws are worth holding us back in the Senate.

I mean, I’m no fan of China’s form of government, but Taiwan willingly and voluntarily joining China (if that’s actually what ends up happening) is definitely one of the better ways for this whole situation to resolve itself.
Joshua Reed Eakle 🗽@JoshEakle

Rubio: “I think China's preference is probably to have Taiwan willingly voluntarily join them.” This is the Trump administration laying the groundwork to abandon Taiwan, just like they did with Ukraine. Authoritarians around the world will celebrate.

So many think pieces on this stuff treat Black voters like idiots who don’t understand what’s happening. I can assure you, they know the VRA is basically dead and understand what’s at stake moving forward. They’ve fought civil rights battles before. They know how to strategize.
POLITICO@politico

A lot of Democrats are willing to sacrifice Black voting power to beat the GOP. In a new POLITICO Poll, a plurality of Dems say the party should counter Republican gerrymandering, even if it means reducing the number of majority-minority districts. 🔗 politi.co/3PkA70E

@RhythmDoc01 @CathyYoung63 I mean, unironically yes, the Democrats should campaign on court packing because it will motivate their [very angry] base to turn out for them and could give them the juice to win in 2028. But by your logic, if the Ds win, they have the legitimacy to move forward with it.

@DamienPales @CathyYoung63 Yes, absolutely. And it gains legitimacy because he was obviously doing it, did so right before an election, and people voted on that basis. If Dems want to campaign on a platform of court-packing, they *absolutely should do that*.

I'm strongly against court packing b/c I don't think we're at a point where institutions are meaningless. BUT let's not ignore the role GOP strategy to deny Obama a last-year appointment on a principle blatantly violated w/RBG replacement has played in the current cynical mood

@RhythmDoc01 @CathyYoung63 The reason McConnell did what he did was because he wanted to move the Court in a certain ideological direction, and that’s what ended up happening. And the reason the Democrats want to pack the court is because they want to do likewise. This is just the reality on the ground.

@RhythmDoc01 @CathyYoung63 Yeah, and doing this has damaged the legitimacy of the Court to a certain extent. Nobody who believes in a truly “independent” judiciary free of political influence would think such tactics were necessary if judges weren’t meant to be partisan and to apply the law faithfully.

The thing is, all of this stuff is going to require nuking the filibuster, which I am highly doubtful that there are enough Democratic senators on board with. That’s doesn’t mean I don’t think most of these proposals are good ideas, but I think we need to temper our expectations.
