You could do that, sure, if you wanted to keep single-member districts. But SMDs have big problems from the standpoint of accurate representation. Gerrymandering is only part of the story. MMDs elected proportionally would end the lock grip of Democrats and Republicans on our representation, thus improving accountability through competition. That's why I think on this issue, Kamala Harris is just mouthing off. She doesn't mean it. I don't believe she really wants us to have the conversation. But I want us to.

I don't understand why we wouldn't do something simple, like say horizontal slicing. For a state with 10 congressional districts (or state legislative seats):Take the latest census block-level population data (publicly available and granular). Project or sort every census block by its north-south position (latitude or y-coordinate on a map). Start from the southernmost point of the state. Accumulate population moving northward until you hit exactly 10% of the state’s total population → that’s District 1 (the southernmost horizontal “slice”). Draw a boundary line (essentially a horizontal cut, adjusted slightly if needed to follow block boundaries) and repeat for the next 10% slice, and so on.

The US party system is like a seesaw in that there's more leverage away from the center. Polarization is incentivized. This has a lot to do with our primary system, where the extreme "base" of a party has an outsize voice in nominating candidates. In a multiparty system, primaries wouldn't be so important. Parties would be more coherent around selected issues, so the question of who to nominate would be less about what "direction" the party should move in -- we already know that from the meaning of the party label. At least somewhat, and to a greater degree than in a party duopoly. Party selection would tend to be done in a more predictable, professional way within the party organization. Which would be appealing to people considering a career in politics. That would be a better system than what we have now, where too often the path to politics is to retire wealthy, then run.

The details definitely matter. I think innovation is needed because we have fallen far behind other Western-style democracies in the quality of our representation. We are now ranked 34th in the world by the Economist Democracy Index, and falling. We are in a severe crisis. We need to get off the Seesaw. Our founders would be horrified by this shitshow of a parade of alternating-side factions that hold the power of majority. A fabricated "majority" that doesn't accurately represent the people.

@DanEckam @EndWokeness Looks like the details really matter. Selection algorithms can be gamed and I'm sure they will be if politicians are involved. I don't particularly like innovation in something so fundamental, although evidently they have been tried to some extent.

@EndWokeness What are "multi members districts"? How do you get rid of the electoral college? Is she just proposing things that can't be done under the Constitution?

Someone tell me why ignoring *the vast* cultural history of Africa (again) and instead rehashing European culture but shoving other races into it isn’t - racist? The medieval and pre medieval history of African empires is amazing. I would very much like to go see, or consume endless series of drama set in the Mali empire etc, with an entirely black cast. Or the Ghana empire? Surely there’s a story here to tell.

‘This is going to be a mass peaking event’ This is an interesting possibility. Most Australian news outlets have had to report this, they can’t ignore it, and despite the compliant nature of the coverage, they’ve almost all had to share pictures of Tickle, who is visibly and undeniably male. That is - despite the best efforts of the media, the depth of what’s happened will percolate into public understanding. That is - ppl will peak.

Dr. Dr. P: "No men. No exceptions".@Psychgirl211

I am devastated @salltweets is having to endure this evil insanity. But this is a Pyrrhic Victory for the hirsute, oleaginous, Trans-Type Psychopath (TTP), Jason Tickle. Every single person in Australia knows he's a big, hairy, ugly, bloke who is just trying it on. The judges who passed this insane ruling know Mr Tickle is a man. Mr Tickle knows he's a man (otherwise, why push so hard?) Even the flipping dingoes and kangaroos know Mr Tickle is a man! This is going to be a mass peaking event. And regardless of how long it takes, this 'victory' will be overturned. Sall Grover is a heroine of our times. Her fight for reality, fairness and to restore sanity will go down in history.

I've been doing research into why toast always lands butter side down when you drop it. I need to double check my maths, but I'm fairly certain the answer is systemic racism.

We hope this post about orphaned negatives makes you gruntled. An ‘orphaned negative’ is a word that SHOULD feel like it has a related word, but doesn’t. ‘Nonchalant’ is an orphaned negative because there is no ‘chalant.’

I am proud to introduce legislation to rename US Highway 287 as Interstate 47 in honor of our 47th President @realDonaldTrump. My bill will upgrade one of our nation’s longest highways to a future interstate and save more than $5 BILLION in travel costs, all while honoring the most effective and influential president of our lifetime. Texas is Trump Country & this bill cements @POTUS’ legacy by designating nearly 1,800 miles of open road to forever be known as the Trump Interstate 🇺🇸

In slow motion @MothinAli absolutely losing it with a woman who disagrees with him. Both his fists are curled and he’s angrily jabbing. This is actually really revealing. He needs to be put on live tv before women who don’t agree with him more often. He can’t cope.

What do you call an intersex person that has a penis and testicles but has XX chromosomes. This person is technically female but has a penis. So what do you say this person is? By the way this happens to 1 in 20,000 people. In a world of over 8 billion humans that’s a lot of people with this condition. By the way it goes the other way too. A person can be born with a vagina making the Dr gender them female at birth but they end up having XY chromosomes technically making them male even though they have a vagina. What would you call them?

I think trans people deserve the same rights to equality, fairness and safety as anyone else. But women don’t have penises and those who pretend otherwise are damaging women’s rights. Why is this controversial?

@SpineCrypto @MarioNawfal Thanks. But does it say what Mario said it says? It's: "... provided she does not wear a robe or refer in anyway [sic] to a judicial function or authority in the performance of a ceremony." vs. Mario: "as long as she doesn't wear a robe or mention she was ever a judge."

🇺🇸 The first openly LGBT judge in Texas has agreed to a lifetime ban from the bench after having a defense attorney handcuffed in her own courtroom. Judge Rosie Speedlin Gonzalez ordered the attorney into custody mid-hearing after an argument over whether she'd coached her client to change his plea. The lawyer was cuffed and placed in the jury box until she agreed to "conduct herself professionally." Gonzalez faced up to 20 years on felony unlawful restraint charges. Those were dropped Monday, the same day she signed the resignation agreement. She can still officiate weddings, as long as she doesn't wear a robe or mention she was ever a judge.
