Charles Adler is free to criticize Pierre Poilievre’s policies, arguments and leadership. He is not free from the standards attached to the Senate seat he accepted. Calling the Leader of the Opposition a “desperate loser” and “the worst bullshitter on the planet” is not serious political debate. It is vulgar partisan trolling from a taxpayer-funded senator. The Senate’s ethics code requires senators to uphold the highest standards of dignity and avoid conduct that damages the institution. Those rules must apply equally, whether the senator is attacking a Liberal, Conservative or anyone else. The Ethics Officer may be legally required to keep any preliminary review confidential. Fair enough. But the Senate cannot preach civility, dignity and institutional respect while ignoring this behaviour because the target happens to be Pierre Poilievre.

How I feel about being a Western Province in Canada

According to the Fraser Institute: Ottawa gave Ontario $19 billion in equalization over 10 years while BC got nothing, despite having lower GDP per person the whole time. The study found discrepancies in all but 3 of the 44 years from 1981 to 2024. In 15 of the last 25 years, provinces with higher GDP per person received payments while provinces with lower GDP per person got nothing. The formula has ongoing structural problems. She highlights Mark Carney’s 3.2 billion dollar condo bailout for developers who donated to him and have ties to his old Brookfield company. Liberals shut down debate on this in the ethics committee. If it fails, hold it accountable and offer Canadians a serious, credible, and viable alternative as a government-in-waiting. Opposition is not about hoping the country fails.
