Met Police officer who moved three hours away from base sues for disability discrimination after being refused WFH, and loses his case. PC Paul Heard, based in Croydon since 2017, relocated to Suffolk in September 2018, creating a punishing six-hour daily round-trip commute. He developed breathlessness in 2021 and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2022, leading to tiredness, depression and periods of sick leave. Heard requested to work from home permanently, claiming the commute worsened his condition, but the Met refused, stating his operational public-facing role required him to attend in person. The force offered flexible adjustments including compressed hours and a phased return, plus a closer posting in Stratford (one-hour commute), which he did not take up. An employment tribunal has now ruled against him, finding the Met acted reasonably and that in-person attendance was essential for an operational police officer. Case dismissed.
