@mwfowlie From a finance pov yes, but there’s something to be said about the psychological benefit of being “debt free”. In Australia I’d personally be milking the tax benefits a house gets you, in this case debt recycling.

@joelbasson @MostlyMonkey The thing is you have more money on hand when you haven’t wasted it paying off 2.6% debt Nobody is saying “don’t use the magic no-debt wand”, they’re saying it’s not worth the cash it costs to pay it off

If you want to encapsulate Donald Trump’s economic vision, a 10% baseline tariff puts the United States in the territory of an African third-world nation. Every single developed nation on planet earth has a baseline tariff of less than 10%, and most of those nations, contrary to what you might believe, exempt the United States from paying tariffs due to trade agreements Trump just scuttled.

@eeldenden Why is it that in Europe every investment decision seems to be done by a government official? Why do Europeans think this will work even at a fraction of the extent at which private investments were made? This is what we called socialism- investment decision being done by the gov

🇪🇺 European Central Bank chief Lagarde calls for an alternative to American Visa and Mastercard in "a march to independence". The completion of the Capital Market Union would pave the way for the Fiscal Union. Further integration would add €3 trillion in value (!) every year

The UAW supporting tarrifs reveals the fundamental problem with American big labor: it is focused on creating scarcity - rents - for it's small group of workers instead of expanding unions more broadly. Taxing 99.9% of labor to benefit 0.1% of labor isn't good.

Assuming you’re asking in a good faith: If the USA gets into a total war with China, we will have to convert ~100% of our economy to weapons manufacturing. Obviously we can’t have 100% of our economy just be weapons manufacturing right now, so the key is to make sure that if war comes, we have the expertise and infrastructure to quickly convert the economy into an industrial wartime powerhouse.

Arguments like this are frustrating. GDP is a measure of how much we produce + is connected to good jobs/wages. The stock market is connected to investment + people’s retirement. They’re not made up numbers. In many ways they’re MORE connected to the real world than vibes.
Isaiah Taylor - making nuclear reactors@isaiah_p_taylor

Man, sometimes I forget that I am not really a tech bro deep down. I am a midwest kid. Most of the time we get along but at the end of the day I don't care about the stock market or the GDP I want my country to make things again, I want my countrymen to be able to raise kids

@JournalistFact1 @JvaJit_CEO @EWErickson It includes all trade barriers. Like in the case of the EU it includes the VAT on imported goods. Exsample. Tariff on American Cars is only 10% but they also charge 20% VAT so it’s really 30%

Congress should stop being cucks and both take back all tariff powers as well as remove the ability to trivially declare national emergencies.

Uncle Sam cannot get a better deal from Vietnam than free. Vietnamese women grind in factories to produce Nikes, while Uncle Sam sends them printed money in return. Who is ripping off whom?
Chelsea Ngoc Minh Nguyen@C_NMNg

On social media, Vietnamese people and diplomats are reacting to Trump’s tariffs with great sadness and disappointment. This month marks the 50th anniversary since the wars in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos with the US ended. All three countries today were among those hit the most.

@yacineMTB @ptremblay That’s why it’s awesome that the world sends America lots of real things and all America has to do is send them fake money That’s what Trump hates and what these tariffs are intended to stop!

The sooner that everyone realizes that the balance of trade doesn't matter, the better. You have a trade deficit with your grocery store, and it's to both your benefit and that of the grocery store.
