Member of the European Parliament, MP @lukasmandl spoke today during EIPA press day about the Abraham accord, strengthening cooperation with the UAE. He argued that the October 7, 2023 attack by Iranian proxies may have been linked to efforts to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, highlighting the importance of the Arab Emirates in promoting regional stability and countering Iran’s influence. He also expressed hope that long-term cooperation could eventually lead to broader regional reconciliation.

Yesterday, EJA Secretary General @DavidLega David Lega delivered, together with @olga_deutsch Olga Deutsch of @NGOmonitor NGO Monitor, a lunch seminar at the Swedish Riksdag, hosted by Members of Parliament @FredrikMalm Fredrik Malm (L) and @MagnusBerntsson Magnus Berntsson (KD). David’s focus was a question that matters more than ever for Jewish communities across Europe: should Jews be recognised as a minority with special protection needs. Jews make up less than 0.2 percent of Europe’s population, yet face a disproportionate share of the continent’s hate and threats, a reality that has only sharpened since October 7. In Sweden, Jews are already one of five recognised national minorities. But recognition is not the same as protection. Protected status would mean security around synagogues and schools planned and funded by the state, not carried by the communities themselves, religious practices such as kosher slaughter and circumcision safeguarded in law, and Jewish history and the Holocaust given a clear place in the curriculum. Olga Deutsch presented new findings on how Hamas has systematically exploited parts of the aid and NGO sector in Gaza, drawing on recently disclosed internal Hamas documents. The two issues are closely linked. Funds diverted through that infiltration help sustain the same networks, including Iran and its proxies, that carry out attacks on Jewish targets across Europe. If these reports are true, comparing Israel to apartheid South Africa is not only factually wrong, but also completely unacceptable for someone speaking on behalf of the EU. At a time when Member States are questioning the direction and size of the EEAS, such remarks further undermine trust in Europe’s foreign policy apparatus.

This weekend, EJA Secretary General @DavidLega was in Scandinavia for three full days. Friday evening he opened the Nordic Israel Congress in Oslo, keynoting for MIFF (MedIsrael for Fred) on antisemitism and anti-Zionism in Europe. @miffno Saturday he addressed the annual congress of Vänskapsförbundet Sverige-Israel outside Stockholm, speaking on Israel’s place in Brussels and the wider world, and what the September 2026 Swedish election means for Israel’s voice in Sweden and in the EU. On Sunday, David was elected Chairman of Vänskapsförbundet Sverige-Israel, @SverigeIsrael one of Scandinavia’s oldest and most active pro-Israel organisations, founded in 1953. Two congresses, two keynotes, one new role. These are the partnerships that matter. Grassroots organisations, engaged communities, and leaders willing to speak plainly about what is at stake for Israel, for Jewish life in Europe, and for the democracies that need to choose a side.
