Reports 15 Labour MPs voted against the whip and 50 abstentions. Much higher than expected. Places Starmer directly in the danger zone regarding a formal leadership challenge (around 80 names needed).

@Lorna_TVeditor Love Attenborough but this hagiolatrous treatment is nauseating in the extreme made worse by rolling out the Kirsty Young Royal family state occasion treatment

@DavidW63 @TraceyY10897 @keithand1957 We know from previous experiences with the Tories that politically targeted demonisation & scapegoating of ill & disabled people usually culminates in imposed cuts to their support.

@DavidW63 @MerrynSW Why are we paying France £662m then if Starmer's having so much success ? The NHS , starved of cash, is on its knees.

It always amazes me that politicians don't just do something about the things people say over and over that they care about!

@6117CH @MerrynSW For ‘rich’ pensioners they pay back the state pension in tax. You’ll be old one day

@DavidW63 @MerrynSW Because it's propaganda calling the poor lazy when most welfare doesn't even go to them. Who are the real abusers? It's the rich pensioners taxing workers for income. 13.1 million retired need carrying by all workers. Means test the state pension!

@6117CH @MerrynSW *sigh* … if they sold the roof over their head. Why do you have such a downer on pensioners?

@MerrynSW Most welfare goes to pensioners, Merryn. Largest part of welfare is the state pension. 1/4 of state pensioners are millionaires.

@MerrynSW Totally agree Mandleson, Heating Allowances, Employees NI, etc would be irrelevant if Starmer had simply Stopped the Boats.

@MerrynSW Because what voters say isn’t always true? They’ve been sold the line again and again that a life on benefits is both easy to get and more lucrative than low paid work. Neither is actually true.

@JamesMelville There is a big risk of market rates for renters rising steeply due to landlord costs rising. I don’t think banning rises will help but the concern for renters is very real.

@LupineLives Even without a rent cap a raise would be limited to market rates. I guess what Reeves is worried about is that market rates would rise steeply due to underlying landlord costs - which is probably true ….

@ShepherdWales @PolitlcsUK @guardian Yes, I suppose so .. but if the landlord was running that tight then they’d sell up. Reeves should stay well out of rent controls. But she is far from the smartest…

Friendly note to Labour MPs ahead of the vote tomorrow to decide if Starmer should face an ethics probe: If you vote against it, Reform will carpet bomb your constituency to ensure all your constituents know you voted to save the most unpopular PM of all time. Vote wisely.

Just throwing this one out there as I was asked this question earlier today. A couple both working with a combined income of £50,000 would pay £11,500 a year in income tax and national insurance, Another couple receiving £50,000 in benefits including Universal Credit, Personal Independent Payment, Housing Benefit, Income Support and Child Benefit would pay no income tax or national insurance, keeping the full £50,000. Should the non-working couple on £50,000 a year pay the same amount of income tax and national insurance as the working couple? Please leave a comment below.
