Let me share a personal experience. My elder sister's daughter is joining LKG this year. In a well-known private school in Tirunelveli, the annual fee charged for her admission is ₹1.85 lakh. In other words, the amount I paid as tuition for an entire year of my engineering education is now being charged for a child studying in LKG. I was shocked and frustrated to learn that such an enormous fee is being collected for an LKG student. Yet, my sister chose to admit her daughter to that private school, partly for the prestige associated with it. But will this trend reduce anytime soon? Certainly not. In Tamil Nadu, private school managements have become a powerful lobby, comparable to the mining mafia in the way they operate and influence the system.
