There’s almost nobody in the United States who is a true “heritage American.”
Your grandparents or great-grandparents were probably Polish or Italian or Irish immigrants.
Mine were Slovenian, Greek, and German.
The promise of America was just as much theirs as it is ours.
That’s the same promise that an immigrant receives today.
The point shouldn’t be to eliminate immigration but rather to ensure that all immigrants to the United States come here legally, work hard, share our values, and are completely committed to our Constitution.

Urinals aren’t some sort of special treat the boys get. They’re used because of scale. It’s a business decision. Urinals are smaller, use less material, & less space. They’re cheaper to implement. You almost never have to unclog them.
It’s not that difficult to figure out.

I think this somewhat misunderstands a deep English (and Anglo-American) cultural expression regarding our relationship to criminals. We loved the dashing highwayman… but we wanted to see him hanged, too.
One can ultimately trace these things back to tales of Robin Hood and broader Anglo-Saxon resistance to the Norman Yoke, but there’s a long history in-between. The common law had long banned torture (unlike on the continent), so it became the custom for captured highwaymen to ‘die game,’ that is, to show bravery, dignity, and defiance in the face of the hangman’s noose, playing to the crowd, showing no fear, right to the end.
(By contrast, in France, such criminals died screaming in undignified agony.)
The crowd always loved it, and they indeed loved *him*, the highwayman. Their cheers for these romantic heroes were authentic. But we’re not talking about the dark ages anymore, we’re talking about early modernity. There was little real sense in which the common Englishman identified with the bandit as some spirit of resistance to foreign tyrants. They were bandits, and they deserved their fate. The people *wanted* him to die, but this did not contradict their sincere admiration for him.
It’s basically a play, everyone had their roles. The cold, indifferent proto-state, the adoring crowds, the dashing rebel.
Many modern people find this incomprehensible. Surely if the crowd sympathizes with the bandit, they want to spare him? The want the King to show mercy? And he would, sometimes; that too was a role to be played. But the English were a bloody people, fatalistic and—in proper Christian fashion—able to sincerely love and forgive a man while approving of the commonwealth sentencing him to death.

Unfortunately, this is a tendency with deep roots in American history- the slopulist urge to root for the allegedly free-spirited and individualistic transgressor. Robin Hood without a social conscience. Oscar Wilde once observed, "The Americans are certainly hero-worshipers, and always take their heroes from the criminal classes."

We could do Venus with modern technology mostly. Giant sunshade at L2, in a few centuries the atmosphere freezes into giant dry ice glaciers. Then you either sequester the CO2 or move it off world. Add a bunch of water perhaps from comets or asteroids, and kickstart a biosphere.
Not easy but it’s only sci-fi because of the scale, not the tech.

There is a hypothesis that Adam, had he not sinned, would have been charged with turning Earth, a wilderness, into a garden akin to Eden. It certainly comports with his post-fall commission "fill the earth and subdue it."
I think the fact that Mars and Venus are wildernesses that are harder to garden than Arizona or Antarctica by an order of magnitude or two -- but only by an order of magnitude or two,-- comports with this hypothesis, and with the Adamic charge.
Now, we are fallen, so who knows how well we can or will succeed. But it looks to me like our immediate cosmic neighborhood has steps up in difficulty like a well-designed videogame.

I had a great chat with a friend of mine, a middle-aged gay man who left Seattle after the 2020 riots made the city he called home for thirty years “unlivable.”
He’s traditionally voted Democrat but asks me for my opinions sometimes. We were talking about taxes and he shared “I wish they’d tax the rich and spend it on social programs instead of war.”
I asked him “what percentage of federal income tax comes from the top 1%?”
“I don’t know. Maybe 10%,” he said.
I told him it was 40%, and that the 1% paid more than the bottom 90% of taxpayers combined. He was shocked. And we both agreed the tax code should be simple and transparent.
And then I asked him what portion of the federal budget is spent on war versus social programs and welfare.
“50% for the Pentagon and 10% for welfare programs.”
I told him it was basically reversed and that social entitlements and welfare spending was actually more than 60%.
Again, he was shocked.
The resentment and envy machine that drives the political left’s slogans thrives on people simply not knowing.

The poster below holds that lining a mailbox with cement--a *passive* defensive measure against mailbox baseball--is a violation of just war theory b/c of the damage it will do to a vandal who is driving in a car with a baseball bat.

This post is an excellent litmus test for understanding of just war theory. Despite the fact that I can see how effective this would be, I must oppose it because the damage it would do to my enemy (who bashes in my mailbox) would far outweigh the good of saving my mailbox. Its disproportionality is opposed by our duty in charity (and even justice) to watch out even for the good of our enemies. (Yes, by the way, I have had my mailbox bashed in by random vandals.)

Reject anyone that calls this "immoral" or a "trap".
A trap must convert safe behavior into unsafe one using force or deception. The stone mailbox is harmful only against inherently unsafe behavior. Self-harm by aggressors is a moral blessing for society.

The Mailbox Test, like the breakfast test, is an excellent way to tell who you can allow to wield power in your society.
Goes like this:
If someone is hurt trying to destroy someone else's stuff in order to take pleasure from their pain, do you sympathize with...
The aggressor because he got hurt?
Or with the guy who owns the stuff, because he wasn't the aggressor?
You can have people in your society who fail the Mailbox Test. That's okay... they can work at hospices, or shelters for orphaned kittens, or something.
But you cannot allow them to vote, or otherwise wield political power. Because if you do, they will open the gates of the city to the enemy.
I am personally tired of everyone pretending that people who enjoy ruining things for random strangers are just kewt smol beans who are only aggressive because of all the complex socioeconomic factors and lack of resources.
They knew someone would be hurt by what they did. They knew that someone had done literally nothing harmful to them. And those two ideas, in combination made them feel pleasure. And they went and did it.
That is the sign of a rotten soul.
Defending ourselves and our property is not just a right, it's a moral obligation. Otherwise, we just kick the can down the road for someone else to deal with, someone who may not be able to defend herself.
I don't care if a vandal breaks his arms trying to destroy my stuff. Because I value my stuff more than a vandal's arms. And the fact that he tried to destroy somebody else's stuff shows that he, too, values his arms less than the opportunity to hurt somebody.
We cannot allow such people inside the city, and we cannot give the keys to those who would open the gates for them.

Probably not. There’s too much risk to innocent parties. Imagine a child or someone with legitimate reason to be on the land or an emergency situation in which it became necessary to cross the land. The spike pit is indiscriminate in its hazards to them.
Conversely, the mailbox posited previously is only hazardous to the malicious vandal.
That said, poachers and trespassers should be punished severely.
