the destruction of American education over the past decade is an incredible self-own competence is objective. a child can either do the math or they can’t. but in the u.s., a lot of people have reasons not to say that! parents don’t want to hear their kid is struggling. teachers don’t want scores used to manage them. districts don’t want embarrassment. progressives worry accountability will create inequity. conservatives don’t want federal authorities. so we end up with process, weak standards, and excuses to explain away bad outcomes. people object that it’s phones, covid, demographic change. ok! but we fail globally when others have phones, covid too — vietnam is much poorer than the u.s., yet performs well in international math comparisons. some countries treat math as a basic skill everyone needs to master. here, it is part of a fight about fairness, autonomy, and feelings in the age of AI — if people can’t do basic math, read closely, or think through problems, ai won’t make them more capable. it will become something they rely on without understanding. the countries that come out ahead in the global race won’t just have better technology. they’ll have people who know how to use it, question it, build on it. we need the national ability to decide something is worth doing coherently (teaching math!) the US has the money to teach math well but it has not shown the will. we are failing the next generation

@dwr An underrated aspect I hadn't predicted: My wife insists she will never own a non-FSD car again, because it reduces the cognitive load of driving with young kids so dramatically. Effortless to pass a snack or toy back without feeling distracted.

Late to the party, but after a couple of 4+ hour road trips and a few weeks around town, the Tesla Y with FSD 14+ is incredible. Someone said it recently: it’s like going from black and white to color TV. And when you drive a regular car again, even if it’s a “better” car, you still feel dumb having to drive yourself.

@levelsio These analyses always group all flying private together. When you filter down to quality operators, it's more like ~4x.

You have about 50x to 100x higher odds to die in a private jet than flying commercial The reason isn't that the planes are bad btw, they're great, but private jets flights are much less strictly regulated than commercial flights They can fly more custom routes, fly into tiny airports and when the passenger (usually a rich person) really needs to be at a meeting in time they might decide to fly through bad weather when a commercial flight would cancel or delay the flight Simply speaking private jets have a lot more freedom which is good and bad Commercial flights are extremely strictly regulated, fly extremely boring routes, the same every day or every few hours back and forth, highly predictable and if one pilot encounters some issue like bad weather they're able to tell the next flying the same route Even if I could afford to fly private, I'd prefer to just board with fast track and go first or business class, it's much safer!

@delk LDS has amazing record keeping. He’s probably tried that path though.

My grandfather has our family lineage traced back to Jamestown (and then the Middle Ages in various parts of Europe). There are a few gaps he's spent decades trying to definitively close. I'm convinced it's finally possible to close them with the latest models (+ agents). I'd like to hire someone to do precisely that. I suspect this could become a general-purpose tool that would be quite valuable to genealogy researchers, if you so choose. DM's open!
