@captain_mrs It is fair because she is YOUR kid. If she wants to be a fashion model later—there are actually ways of wrapping your foot and making them fit in shoes (+ modeling is not really “comfortable”, anyway). She can do that when she can make her own choices. No one is “locked in.”

a perpetual ethical quandary is - what is it ok for parents to decide on behalf of their kids, and to what extent that should be dictated by societal defaults. today I'm thinking about shoes. husband and I wear barefoot style shoes and by default I would put my kid in them her whole childhood because warping the foot's natural shape to shoe shape seems abhorrent now that we don't do it any more and I hate that my little toes are all curled up and turned in. except is it really ok for me as a mum to decide that she will need barefoot shoes all her life and her feet will be foot shaped and not comfortably fit into fashion shoes and high heels? what if she wanted to be a fashion model as a teenager? is it really fair for me to rule her out of career choices and gender expression now by going against the social norm?

@petalreads A little book no one knows about by the title, “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret”. Incidentally, my first daughter’s name is Margaret. I’m sure those facts aren’t related. 😉

@ImColbyLyons “C sections” are called such for a reason. If you know some basic anicient history…you’ll know why. This is sometimes taken SO for granted that it’s assumed to be “background knowledge”. That’s basically what cultural literacy is.

@ImColbyLyons Anytime you see an allusion to something in the classic literature—the author mentioned it because it was known by nearly everyone. It’s why Biblical stories are some of the most often used allusions. Things that are alluded to: Cultural literacy.

What are some of your favorite family games? We have been enjoying Apples to Apples lately. Good for building both vocabulary and cultural literacy.

@MrsCMFrancis Also, how absolutely massive that brown land mass is and yet from space? It’s a speck. We are truly much more insignificant to the universe than we ever think about.

@opinionatededed @cwik_greg I THINK this person meant “canon”, but, many people have mentioned SEVERAL classics that can be read in that time. To Kill a Mockingbird could probably be done in under 5 hours, too, but I haven’t timed it. Haha.

@AmyLove91172704 @cwik_greg In fact I’m pretty sure I read this for a summer class in literature and I *had to* go to class one morning and then finish the novel by the next day in class to discuss. We did 8 books in a 4 week class, I think? IDK, it was something like 15 years ago so I forget precisely.

@cwik_greg what qualifies as serious fiction? One could finish, like, As I Lay Dying in an afternoon

@Qnofcuneiform @MelanieSent Sometimes she’ll go back to sleep, sometimes just start her day by lying around quietly! It’s the routine and schedule I crafted for them, so it’s what they follow. My early riser will likely have a different schedule when she’s older.

@Qnofcuneiform @MelanieSent I developed our 9-9 schedule by just creating that routine. They are in their beds 9-9. Sleeping is optional, but they have to be horizontal and quiet. Just like anything, if it is consistent daily, your body gets used to it. I have one who will wake early and just lie there…

The reality is, these people’s kids legit get up at 5am. And it’s pitch black in the winter. It’s a no from me. I love love love the 9pm-9am routine. It’s sooo good. Even 10-10 is so good. Anything later is iconic for me bc I am a night owl

We are an early bedtime for the children household. They need a full nights sleep. I need silence, time to take care of myself and rest. My husband needs time to decompress. My marriage needs the chance for us to be together without being interrupted or pulled away from one another constantly. It’s win win win win all around.

9 yo: We can throw this dead flower (weed) outside and then a new one will grow! Me: It doesn’t really work like that. 5 y/o: yes it IS. It’s part of the equal-system. Me: Do you mean ECOSYSTEM? 5y/o: yeah. Me: Ok. It still doesn’t work like that.

@dickens1298 @KILLTOPARTY I hide like 130 for my two kids. But everything is thrown together in a bucket for the WHOLE FAMILY to enjoy—usually for months—and no one is “limited” in what eggs they can find. …you realize you can put ONE piece of candy in each egg, right? …150 eggs = 2-3 bags candy.

@KILLTOPARTY 150 eggs. I'm sorry - but who's going to hide that many for 3 kids. And a kid is going to be excited about opening that yellow plastic egg just to find more jelly beans, or a peep? That's a lot of sugar - maybe you oughta ratchet down his glucose levels.

@KILLTOPARTY Why does it matter? Throw all the insides of the eggs into the same bucket and everyone eats the candy. It’s literally not a problem.

Remember when we didn’t see the insides of other people’s houses and didn’t complain about them or shame others for them because they weren’t posted for rage bait on X all day long? I do. Whatever, man. Someone else’s house can look however they want it to. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The year I only read like 2 books because I had an infant and probably some PPA (because a new infant after losing one unexplainably is, you know, anxiety-inducing), I thought it was SO BAD. But it wasn’t. 2 books that year because 62 books last year. Just start somewhere.

@LindaFlanagan2 @annbauerwriter This is what I love about books, though—all of us bring different perspectives. Someone else’s FAVORITE book is going to be awful for me, and vice versa. The reader is part of how the book “lands”, and that’s beautiful.
