Everyone in Britain is heir to an extremely complex & ancient Celtic mythological cycle of native gods & heroes, just like Ireland, but set in the country in which they live, yet the British educational system actively ignores it. I doubt 1/10000 children could name a British god

@ClarkeMicah @tiddlyoggy As a true patriotic undergraduate it came as a shock when I read the Cabinet War Minutes and it was clear that the threat of invasion (albeit on the extremes of possibility) was more used as a method to focus the country on the need for sacrifice.

@SketchesbyBoze @SydSteyerhart It's not *just* about whaling, sure, but it spends over half its time going over the bloody details of whaling in all of its gruesome detail, so calling it a book about whaling is certainly not incorrect.

Blood Meridian is the true great American novel, not Moby Dick. The future will recognize it. America is a story and a people of the bloody frontier, not whaling boats out of New Bedford.
