What is happening right now is unacceptable. Inside #Afghanistan, #Pakistan claim to be fighting the #Taliban — yet civilians are being bombed. Families, children, ordinary people are paying the price. At the same time, in Pakistan, Afghans who are already desperate are being arrested because the border is closed — men, women, children, the elderly, even the sick — all being put into detention without protection. And yes, we know the situation is complex. The Taliban are harbouring the Pakistani Taliban. But how can this justify punishing innocent civilians? This is not security. This is collective punishment. Afghan people should not be trapped between violence inside the country and humiliation at the borders. We need accountability. We need humanity. In Iran, our Afghan Women Activists Coordinating Body network has hundreds of Afghan women activists with whom we are in contact every day as the bombing continues. These are women who escaped the atrocities of the Taliban in search of a safer and more dignified life. Some of them were studying, others were waiting for their asylum or resettlement cases to be processed for a third country. The majority, however, were simply trying to work and build a life to support their children and sick family members. They fled Afghanistan because women were no longer allowed to work, and their daughters were denied the basic right to go to school. Today, many of these same women once again face fear and uncertainty as the war reaches the places where they sought refuge. Together with our volunteers and partners, we are working day and night to help relocate them to safer cities within Iran and to provide emergency support where possible. We hope this war will end soon. No people and no country should have to live under the shadow of war. We welcome and sincerely thank the more than 40 countries that have united to announce their support for the women of Afghanistan. Your solidarity sends an important message to Afghan women who have been living under systematic gender apartheid for almost four years. However, statements alone are not enough. If the international community truly stands with Afghan women, it must take concrete action. We therefore call on these governments to move beyond declarations and push for targeted sanctions against the Taliban leadership and their assets around the world. Without real consequences, the Taliban will not change their policies. Afghan women cannot wait any longer. Standing with Afghan women means using every available political, legal, and economic tool to pressure the Taliban to end gender apartheid. The world has spoken. Now the world must act. ✊

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, I extend my congratulations to all women around the world, especially to the brave women of Afghanistan who continue to stand strong despite immense pressure and restrictions. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the courageous members of the Afghan Women Activists Coordinating Body in Iran, who are tirelessly working to support and rescue Afghan women caught in insecurity and bombardments. In the past two days, with the help of our dedicated members, we were able to evacuate 69 Afghan women, including 13 students, from Qom, Tehran, and Esfahan to safer cities. We have also managed to reconnect hundreds of families with their loved ones and have gathered lists of women who are alone and without support so that we can find ways to assist them. I also thank our members in Pakistan, Iraq, Malaysia, and across Afghanistan in more than 30 provinces, who continue to stand together, supporting one another and providing moral strength and solidarity. I would also like to express my appreciation to all women around the world who have stood in solidarity with Afghan women and supported their struggle for dignity and rights. On this day, we also stand in solidarity with the women of Iran, whose courage and struggle for freedom inspire many across the region, and we hope for peace and stability in Iran and throughout the world, so that women and children no longer have to live under the shadow of war. On this important day, we reaffirm that the voices of Afghan women will not be silenced.
