the obvious problem with this facile comparison is that it's simply wrong. the "imagine the world you would want if you were sudanese!!" only works, from a leftist perspective, bc you assume the "you" that transfers somehow remains committed to your leftist, modern, western principles but that's obviously wrong. as a for example, one might try to make the argument against female genital mutilation by saying "imagine if you were a woman in one of these cultures! what law would you want??" but the thing is that in cultures that practice FGM, it's the *women* who enforce it. so, empirically, if one were a woman in that culture the vast, vast likelihood is that "i" would then view FGM as a beloved cultural practice that filled me with pride, one i was proud to have partaken in and would feel wounded if I couldn't pass onto my kids. the only way "i" in that situation would come down against it is if "i" somehow maintained my modern western civilizational perspective and literally the only thing that changed was i was somehow in their body. but, again, that's not empathy, that's thinking of yourself again. this is in contrast to "what if you didn't have breakfast" bc there the "you" is the same person. how would you, the you right here, behave in this counterfactual. that can be done without fundamentally changing who i am. the other irony is that the leftist version, the "you" who is sudanese but somehow still a modern western-acculturated person, would obviously desperately want someone to come end my and everyone around me's suffering in the barbarous backwards society i found myself in. the left jumps to "so you must support infinity migration, see?" but it far more obviously supports the conclusion "that is why we must invade and end all of these barbarous societal practices by force!"
