So, what’s it like? Love? It’s like snow. You know how there’s mornings you wake up, and the night before you knew that snow might be coming, but you’d forgotten, then you go to the window and it’s everywhere, & you’re surprised, but not really. So… is there snow? All around.

It’s just extremely strange that the Vice President of the United States is giving a campaign speech in a foreign country at all, much less that he’s specifically urging the re-election of the pro-Russian anti-western party rather than the reverse.

Eventually someone will be brave enough to reclaim the literary space left vacant by Playboy when they decided to stop producing “entertainment for men”; in the meantime we’ll have 500 more inane discourses about gee gosh why don’t men read stuff written by people who hate them

UnHerd@unherd

WHAT PLAYBOY GOT RIGHT ABOUT MEN, by Kat Rosenfield (@katrosenfield) Once upon a time, no conversation about ‘Playboy’ magazine was complete without a jab at the oft-repeated claim by certain men to read it for the articles — which was broadly understood to be nonsense, the pretend literacy of the shameless horny liar. But today, on the eve of what would have been the centennial birthday of ‘Playboy’ progenitor Hugh Hefner — and two decades into the era of ubiquitous, hardcore, high-definition internet porn that makes Playboy’s softly lit, artfully posed centrefold look positively quaint, even pre-Raphaelite, by comparison — I must grudgingly admit that the defence of the nudie magazine as literary artefact seems a lot less ridiculous than it once did. Did anyone read ‘Playboy’ just for the articles? Probably not, and yet there was a time, not so long ago, when they plausibly could have. It was a golden era of great tits and great journalism, where lust and literacy still existed in conversation, rather than in conflict. Read more below ⬇️ buff.ly/HIJz7Ia

This case sets such a terrible precedent. Two women are going to prison for a long time, despite not having done anything that appears to actually be criminal. Why? Because the feds stretched a law meant to address *modern-day slavery* to prosecute a “forced labor conspiracy” at their strange sexual wellness company—even though everyone there joined freely and could leave at any time. It is an absurd reading of the statute. I get why people would be grossed out by OneTaste. But even unpopular people with weird beliefs deserve fairness under the law.
The Free Press@TheFP

The cultish sexual wellness group was not exactly wholesome. But the founder’s prosecution and nine-year sentence distorts the law, writes Billy Binion. thefp.com/p/the-unjust-p…

My @reason colleagues @ENBrown and @billybinion are among the very few in the press that have defended the 'orgasmic meditation' group OneTaste against egregious federal prosecution that was long titillation and short on evidence of coercion or other serious wrongdoing. Anyone who has preferences, sexual or otherwise, that are easily vilified should take note. Proud to work with people who consistently stand up for individual rights and rule of law against mob mentality. Mehdi Hasan is now accusing me of supporting the killing of the schoolgirls in Minab because I pointed out that him saying "Iran is Ukraine" is a little tone deaf considering Iran is currently helping mass-murder Ukrainians.

@KareemRifai @Kasparov63 Tell every Iranian school girl who was murdered on day one of this war that you support their killing because of their government’s use of Shahed drones. 👏🏽👏🏽

Watching people defend this Iran train wreck makes me sad on a meta level of people being whores. I am fine with people being wrong and think our system needs people being wrong. I am often wrong! But just admit that you got it wrong. Admit you, you fucking cowards! Admit it!
Ben Dreyfuss@bendreyfuss

I was open to it in the beginning because I am a sucker for “bomb the regime to help the people” even though it essentially never works. But it was clear almost immediately that Trump didn’t even share my “kill until the Iranian people are free” goal. Indeed he had no goals?

The Blaze dedicated a business to criticizing the mainstream media & moralizing about "fake news." And yet they published one of the shoddiest—and likely libelous—stories I can remember. Incredible hypocrisy. If they survive, no one should take them seriously again.
Will Sommer@willsommer

Pro-Trump media outlet The Blaze is "in the fetal position" over how much they may have to pay for falsely accusing a Capitol Police officer of being the Jan. 6 pipe bomber. Now they've fired their star reporter over the story. @BulwarkOnline thebulwark.com/p/the-blaze-fi…

I know I’ve said this before, but I remain amazed by the number of conservative orgs that decry fake news while *relentlessly* spreading it. There’s a lack of media integrity out there—I agree. And the places that complain about it the most are often the worst offenders.

It’s worth taking a step back to consider: Why do geographers need to take a stand against Israel?
ADL@ADL

ADL and @TheAENetwork are deeply concerned by the recent American Association of Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting, where multiple sessions promoted BDS and featured overwhelmingly one-sided presentations. Promoting exclusionary academic practices contributes to the marginalization of many Jewish members. These issues persist despite prior concerns and signal an erosion of scholarly standards. We call on AAG leadership to take these concerns seriously and to implement meaningful reforms to ensure academic rigor, inclusivity, and respectful dialogue.
