NEWS: Duke transfer Nikolas Khamenia has committed to UConn, he announced. Former top-15 recruit averaged 5.7 points and 3.3 rebounds, but posted 10.7 points in three ACC tournament games when given a bigger role. Skilled offensively. Dan Hurley has his Alex Karaban replacement.

@Duke_Buzz If we do somehow get all four then I'd expect some 3 guard lineups. It's not like Cayden, Caleb, and Blackwell are small. I think a lack of center depth is a much bigger problem than a potential guard logjam

@arrest_jack I totally agree, maybe UConn can make him work but that doesn’t change that he’d most likely be a depth guy for us again next year. People are reacting to this as if Evans was the one transferring to UConn.

@DukeNBA I don’t think it’s that bad bc Nik as of right now is expendable. It’s not like the Mensah situation where we prioritize and rely on his return and he still snakes us. Sure, maybe Hurley can make Nik work out, but as of now he’s not a priority.

@draftballr From a Duke fan- yes there is. I have him on the lower end of the same tier as the other 3 just because athletic non-shooting 4 is a bust prone archetype, but his production is undeniable, his ceiling is as high as any, and if teams really believe in his growth, #1 is def in play

@dpic2515 There was nothing special about Nik’s freshman year. He had some moments but overall was just a guy and not egregiously bad anywhere. He’d be good as a depth piece next year, but would have to improve significantly to be a major part of a championship team.

No disrespect to him but can Williams better be awesome. I know how good Nik will be and I much rather have a sophomore than a freshman. Especially one like Nik who showed up in the big moments.

@draftballr @EnigmaReverse I don't like Horford as a comparison. The post does acknowledge Horford isn't a good defensive comparison, and Horford went from absolute non-shooter in college (0% 3s and <65% FT) to good nba shooter which is outlier development. Hartenstein is a great comp though

@dpic2515 He did improve from last season and I thought he had it figured out until UConn happened. Maybe he’ll figure it out next year, maybe in 5 years, maybe never, but there’s nothing we can do for now

I know choking again sucks but Scheyer did learn from the Houston came. He played a tough schedule and coached his ass off this year. Next thing to learn is to go after depth. 9 guys was a bad move. And final lesson will be can he close.

@Sports_Kings_ Damn, I'm surprised it's a few players and not just DH. Nik and Wilkins aren't starters on a championship team (barring a big leap) but I'd have been fine w/ them as depth pieces. Looking forward to seeing who we're getting, Scheyer has rarely missed in the portal.

Confirmed: Scheyer is big game hunting in the portal. Everyone will not be back at Duke. A few players will be unceremoniously told to search for better options. Months ago I reported on one player that is already guaranteed to go in the portal due to lack of playing time

I've seen a few fan-made lists floating around of players that they think are returning to Duke. I've yet to see even one that is remotely close to reality. Scheyer is hitting the portal hard. I think the bigger question is who, if anyone, will be added to the coaching staff

You have to feel for Kelvin Sampson falling short of the ultimate goal again tonight. The man has a legendary resume: 800+ wins, multiple Final Fours, and a culture that is second to none. But to finally break through and cut down the nets, Houston has to give him a massive financial budget to build an elite roster. Adding a National Championship is the last piece missing from his Hall of Fame resume. It’s time for Houston to empty the vault.
