With the recent US Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais effectively prohibiting states from redrawing maps that use race as a criterion, a judge with any decency would have reverted legislative maps to their original boundaries. Sadly for Washingtonians, Judge Robert Lasnik, Western District of Washington, is no such judge. Instead, he is partisan toward Democrats, while dismissing the Constitution and the rule of law. Read Lasnik's new ruling, wherein he refuses to revert the map back to the way it was for the 2026 elections. Despite this, the Washington State Republican Party (@WAGOP) is fighting in court to restore the map for this election, and future elections, and end the gerrymander. tinyurl.com/5e44kdc9 Washington State has maintained a bipartisan redistricting commission for decades, avoiding the gerrymandering schemes many other states are currently struggling with. Democrats were obsessed with getting a Latino majority district out in central Washington, and Republicans agreed to one that was upwards of 70% Hispanic. In 2022, however, Democrats failed to get their preferred white senate candidate elected in this district, which instead opted for a Hispanic Republican: Nikki Torres. How did Democrats cope with this? They sued in Federal Court crying racial discrimination. Partisan Judge Robert Lasnik had original jurisdiction over the case and—in arrogant fashion—ruled that Democrat policies represent Hispanics better than Republican policies. He ordered the Legislature to redraw their legislative map to make the district more representative of Hispanics, giving them a deadline of a couple months before the election. Democrats, who controlled the Legislature, sat on their hands opting for Lasnik to redraw the map instead. Lasnik hired an "academic" professional from Delaware to redraw the map. He then rubberstamped the map she drew, which made the district less Hispanic, but far more favorable to Democrats, moving 14 points or so to the left. As a result, Lasnik reasoned he was making the district more Hispanic and more representative of Hispanic interests. He also proceeded to renumber the districts so Democrats could get another shot at the Senate seat in 2024. The map unnecessarily changed 12 other legislative districts, as far as 250 miles away, drew 5 Republican incumbents out of their seats, and moved two other Republican leaning districts firmly into the Democrat column. All of this was completely unnecessary to redraw the map, and mere weeks before the filing deadline, but Lasnik wanted to give Democrats super majorities so they could unilaterally change the state constitution. Despite this, the WAGOP, in conjunction with hard-working Republican candidates, managed to defend the districts they held that were gerrymandered by Lasnik, foiling his partisan scheme. You can see the original map (on top) the commission approved, which Lasnik claimed was a racial gerrymander, and the redraw Lasnik proposed, which he claimed wasn't a gerrymander. Act: Lasnik frequently donates to very liberal Democrats and causes through his wife and political mouthpiece, Seda Lasnik, to circumvent any blemishes on his "neutral" judicial record. Even so, he is is brazen enough to vote in Democrat Presidential primaries. To reiterate: Judge Lasnik is not neutral. Write your Congressmembers urging them to impeach Lasnik for the legislation he unilaterally passes.
