I'm going to do the break character thing which I don't do too often. Way back in 1994 I think Stephen Colbert was one of my instructors at the Second City Training Center in Chicago. I had him for 8 weeks of classes with a dozen other aspiring improvisers and he was a genuinely funny and nice guy. He was a new dad so unlike other instructors like Steve Carell, he didn't go out with us afterwards too much, but one time he and I had a 90 minute conversation about all things Dungeons and Dragons and Gen Con which I think confused the other improvisers. The guy was as big a nerd as me. This is not the end for him. There isn't much that he can't do.

I have taught research classes. The first assignment is the literature review. You must read every paper you cite. If you used a paper they cite, you must read it. Presume nothing. Read. Yes, it typically is a lot of reading. A whole lot. This is called learning…
Lenka Zdeborova@zdeborova

@eiszett Have you read all the sources you ever cited? During my PhD we, along with dozens of other papers, cited a paper that I later found did not contain the result for which it was commonly cited. I should be banned I guess.

@ProtonInspector It's a grave disservice to actual scholars who will see a citation they believe to be relevant to their own work and seek out the source for more information only to find it does not exist. Such a baffling position all around to claim it's not a problem

Very strange that it seems some people see citations as essentially flavour text to puff up your credibility and not a mechanism to provide crucial context and foundational information which your work relies on

The first step to any research project is a literature review, which includes actually reading the existing papers about your topic of study. This was covered on the first day of my research class in graduate school.

@AGoldmund I teach research and I’ve warned my students that if they don’t read the papers they’ve cited, their dreams will be haunted by circus clowns.

If I were smith college I would immediately launch a review of this guy’s work. Yes, I expect you to read the works you’re citing. Yes, i expect you to face some kind of penalty for including hallucinated citations in your work. You sound very bad at your job

@RepJackKimble If you’re hiring replacements, I’d like to apply. I have no experience, poor judgment, and a long history of posting things I should’ve kept to myself, so I feel uniquely qualified.

I want to take this moment to apologize yet again to the American people. Yesterday, I was forced to let my staffers Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike go because of some highly offensive and inappropriate tweeting from my account. Unfortunately, it continued this morning.

Dingy is a ~2.5 year old spayed female who enjoys running around very fast, playing with toys, and generally being kind of weird. She has big eyes and is one of the cutest cats I've ever seen. Why is she still here?!

Happy Mother's Day! 💐💕 Dingy was a wonderful mother to her 4 beautiful kittens almost 1 year ago. They were all adopted, but sweet Dingy is *still* waiting for her happily ever after. Please share to help Dingy get adopted! 🩷 📍 SF Bay Area

@Hazel_qs Does a person have to disclose that they are wearing a medical device to have their choice respected? Really? No isn’t sufficient?

My cousin thought it would be “funny” to shove me into the pool. I told him not to. Once. Twice. Three times. I said, very clearly: “Do not touch me.” He laughed in front of everyone and threw me in anyway. When I came up, my hearing aids were dead. Completely destroyed. Replacement cost: $6,000. His response? “I didn’t know you were wearing them.” Then he refused to pay. Said it was “just a joke.” My family immediately took his side. Their logic? “You make more money.” “He has a baby.” “He’s still in college.” “Don’t ruin his future over an accident.” But it wasn’t an accident. I warned him repeatedly. He ignored me. So I sued him. And I won. The court ordered him to pay the full amount. He still didn’t. Now 20% of every paycheck he earns is automatically taken until the debt is paid. He ended up dropping out of college because he couldn’t keep up financially. And somehow… I’m the one the family calls cruel. Apparently, in my family, respecting boundaries is optional. But expecting adults to pay for the damage they cause? That makes you the villain.

@luxemiaa And nothing. Sounds like he is a good steward with his money and your waistline. Why not simply say “thank you?” You should. He did the right thing. Stop wasting food, or, if you weren’t going to waste any, then stop stuffing your face. Either way, he was in the right.

I went on a date and ordered a salad and fries. That was my meal. The waiter wrote it down and moved on to him. He asked, “Does the club sandwich come with fries?” The waiter said yes. He said, “Great, I’ll have the club.” Then he looked at the waiter and said, “And you can cancel her fries.” My fries. The fries I had specifically ordered for myself. Canceled without discussion, as if he had full legal authority over my potato decisions. I just sat there staring at him. This man had known me for maybe 20 minutes and was already editing my order. I asked why he did that. He said, “You can just have some of mine.” That was not the point. First of all, I wanted my own fries. Second, I do not want to negotiate over side dishes with a man I barely know. And.,......

@feederofcats My beautiful former stray FIV + baby lived safely and happily with my other cats. He lived out the rest of his life with his cat sisters, no one was worse for the wear.

FIV is transmitted through deep bite wounds (like aggressive fighting, not playful chomps). Cats who get along (and cats with no teeth!) are basically at no risk of transmitting FIV. also, FIV is not a big deal anyway

Calling this a “prank” doesn’t make it any less abusive or dangerous. I genuinely hope those women leave those toxic relationships..

@donkeybutt2322 @hell_line0 How is it not abusive? Many of us are attached to our hair, our specific styles, etc. Losing that to someone’s whim is traumatic. Yes, it’s abusive. So is using the r word to describe a human.

@hell_line0 It's not abusive, but it is retarded. Why choose to cause distress when you can simply not? These women are clearly in that 5 minute window per day where they're not batshit insane, and you choose to slam that window shut and start the crazy bitch train up.
